mchunuBy Allan Fox: In a fight that was one-sided from start to finish, #2 WBC, #7 IBF, #10 WBO cruiserweight contender Thabisio Mchunu (17-1, 11 KOs) easily defeated a badly over-matched Garrett Wilson (13-8-1, 7 KOs) in beating him by a 10 round unanimous decision on Saturday night at the Foxwoods Resort, Mashantucket, Connecticut, USA.

The final judges’ scores were 96-93, 99-90 and 98-91. The 99-90 score was by far the most accurate score of the three, as Wilson arguably didn’t win one round in the fight. It was so one-sided that it wasn’t even entertaining.

The same applies for the mismatch in the co-feature between undefeated lightweight Karl Dargan (17-0, 9 KOs) and the 6’2” Angino Perez (16-6, 14 KOs). Dargan knocked Perez down twice in the 5th round with right hands to the back of the head. The fight was then stopped at 1:32 of the round. Earlier in the fight, Perez had knocked an off balance Dargan with a jab, but it was more of a balance thing with Perez catching Dargan when he was backing up.

Mchunu did a great job of landing counter shots each time Wilson would land a shot or attempt to land anything. The 5’11” Mchunu looks closer to 5’8” than his listed height, was able to score with single pot shots all the way through the fight. Standing out of a southpaw stance, Mchunu resembled a bigger version of Floyd Mayweather Jr, but with a more compact build. Mchunu found with the shoulder roll, and he showed excellent ability to pick off shots each time Wilson would attempt to throw any.

Mchunu needs to step it up against better opposition in the future because he’s too good to be fighting guys like Wilson. I’m not sure what the point is with him getting matched up against this caliber of opponent because he’s capable of facing far superior fighters than this.
