_DSC0260(Photo credit: Esther Lin/Showtime) By Dan Ambrose: Marcos Maidana (35-4, 31 KOs) and his trainer Robert Garcia have been talking about how he plans on coming into this Saturday’s rematch against WBA/WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr (46-0, 26 KOs) below 160 pounds, but Mayweather thinks Maidana will be once again weighing well over 160 pounds when he gets inside the ring with him.

Maidana, who probably should be fighting in the junior middleweight division at this point in his career, weighed in sat 165 pounds the night of the fight last May against Mayweather. Maidana had rehydrated almost 20 pounds after making weight at 147.

Maidana blames his high weight on him having had only 5 weeks to train for the fight. However, Maidana weighed 165 for his fight against Adrien Broner last December as well, and he had a full 9 weeks to train for that fight and he still came in close to 170.

“That boy [Maidana] knows he needs your help getting that weight off,” Mayweather said to Alex Ariza. “That boy knows he weighs 160, 160-something right now. He knows he needs your help getting that weight off. They aren’t loyal.”

Maidana won’t have Alex Ariza to help him lose weight for the fight. Ariza was let go by Garcia before training camp started. Now it’s going to be on Maidana to try and shed the weight for the fight. I think he’ll get down to the right weight, but I agree with Mayweather that he’s going to be over 160 again. It’s one thing to talk about taking weight off but another thing to actually do it.

I don’t think Maidana taken any weight off other the water weight that he’s taken off this week to get down to the 147 pound limit. Once Maidana weighs in today for the weigh-in, my guess is he’ll put 18 pounds of water weight back on and march into the find at 165 for the fight.

Without a weight advantage, Maidana really doesn’t have anything in this fight for him to be competitive with Mayweather. He doesn’t have the speed, and he certainly doesn’t have the boxing skills. The only thing Maidana has is the weight advantage. He’s another Canelo Alvarez type fighter that dehydrates to make weight to fight lighter guys than him.
