Floyd Mayweather vs Marcos Maidana(Photo credit: Esther Lin/Showtime) By Cameron Gillon: WBA/WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr (47-0, 26 KOs) defeated Marcos Maidana (35-5, 31 KOs) by a 12 round unanimous decision victory last Saturday night at the MGM Grand, Las Vegas, Nevada.

It was a rematch from there May fight earlier this year. The rematch came about after feeling in some fans eyes and certainly Maidana and his camp that they done enough to get the victory. What was very unlike Mayweather, he granted Maidana a rematch despite clearly winning the fight this time round last May. I thought he did this first time but this one was certainly a lot clearer than the first bout.

After Mayweather’s win last night over Maidana, Mayweather was interviewed and was asked about a possible fight with WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao to which Mayweather answered “I don’t know what the future holds for Floyd Mayweather. All I know is I will fight in May but we haven’t got an opponent. If the fight with Manny Pacquiao presents itself, then let’s make it happen.”

I was completely shocked by this comment. Floyd has been rather quiet about making this fight for some time. Manny has been very open about making this fight happen over the past month in his build up to his next fight against Chris Algieri, but Mayweather hasn’t commented back until now, You can understand why Mayweather wanted to focus on Maidana rather than answering those type of questions, because Mayweather never looks past an opponent and he wanted to get past Maidana before considering anything on his next opponent.

Floyd then also added post-fight “At the moment I want to go home, have a break, spend some time with my children and then see whose next in May. Hopefully it’s Manny Pacquiao.”

It looks like Floyd is ready to go for this fight. It may be 5 years too late but it certainly would still generate a lot of pay-per-view buys and be the richest fight in the sports history. Mayweather also added it would have to be on his terms and Showtime and Mayweather Promotions would have to do the fight, depending on if Pacquiao gets past his next fight against Chris Algieri on November 22nd, then this fight can happen.

The only way it wouldn’t is if Pacquiao then once again refused to take a smaller percentage of the money and would ask for an even split. Pacquiao recently stated he would give Mayweather all his demands for the fight. So if Mayweather is serious about this then it’s all down to Manny now, but don’t hold your breath on this fight.
