Canelo: If I have to fight Golovkin then no problem

golovin1By Dan Ambrose: Saul “Canelo” Alvarez says he would have issues fighting WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin in the future if that’s a fight that his team at Golden Boy Promotions were to make for him. Canelo and Golovkin sparred in the past and Canelo came away from the sparring session impressed with the power of Golovkin.

There’s no talk now of Golden Boy Promotions matching Golovkin in the future unfortunately. The next guy that Golden Boy is rumored to be matching Canelo up against is 37-year-old Joshua Clottey on December 6th in Texas.

Clottey has got to be about as far as you can get from Golovkin, and it looks like Golden Boy doesn’t want to take any chances of Canelo getting beaten again. The fight that Golden Boy wants is Miguel Cotto vs. Canelo next year in May.

It’s still too early to know if that fight can be negotiated due to both Canelo and Cotto likely wanting to be the A-side in the negotiations. It would seem like a big stalemate with two rams smashing into each other and refusing to give ground.

“You know what it was good sparring [against Golovkin],” Canelo said via esnewsreporting.com. “He’s a very strong fighter. He’s a very, very strong fighter. We helped each other out pretty much. What can I say about him? He’s not only a good fighter, he’s a nice person as well. He’s a very nice person, but honestly, this is a business; this is a sport. If I have to fight him, no problem.”

It would be nice if Golden Boy took a break from matching him against the Clottey’s and Alfredo Angulo’s and put Canelo in with Golovkin to see what Canelo’s got. If he gets blasted out then so be it. Canelo already said “No problem,” so he should be willing to give the fight that boxing fans want to see with him facing Golovkin.

It’s a fight that will likely be much, much easier to put together than a fight against Cotto. I have serious doubts that Canelo-Cotto fight can be put together because neither of these guys are going to want to give an inch in the negotiations.

This isn’t Sergio Martinez that Cotto will be fighting. Martinez gave ground to make the fight with Cotto happen. I don’t see Canelo giving an inch, and that’s put Cotto in a position where he’ll have to either agree to a fight on even terms, which I doubt he’ll accept, or he can walk away.
