ward765By Cameron Gillon: WBA super middleweight champion Andre Ward is hoping to be back in the ring early 2015, the unbeaten american super middleweight is still involved in a long battle lawsuit with promoter Dan Goosen and it doesn’t look like that’s going to end anytime soon.

It’s a big shame that Ward has this problem, the guy has a lot of talent and would be one of the hot runners to take over Floyd Mayweather Jr’s spot as the pound for pound king when he retires, he could still do that but needs to get active, Ward won the super six tournament in 2011 and held the WBC, WBA and Ring and Lineal super middleweight titles and hasn’t lost any of them but due to being inactive he was stripped off the WBC title and refused to have the champion emeritus status.

Ward is the current WBA super champion in that division but the notable champion with that belt now is Carl Froch. Ward holds the real title and hardcore fans know that, but he is wasting a lot of time on his career now. Ward is only getting older but he is only just coming into his prime now.

Ward’s last fight was in December 2013 where he won a unanimous decision over then unbeaten Edwin Rodriguez. Before that he beat Chad Dawson. Unfortunately, Ward has only had 2 fights in 2 years and you have to wonder whether we will see him in the ring again.

Ward says its not the lawsuit stopping him from fighting. Personally I couldn’t see Ward ever losing anyway. He has cleaned out the super middleweight division and the young fighters like Gilberto Ramirez, George Groves, James Degale and Anthony Dirrell aren’t ready to fight Ward just yet. Ward’s best bet when or if he returns is to move up to light heavyweight division and face Adonis Stevenson, Sergey Kovalev or Bernard Hopkins and go after them titles.

Another big fight fans want to see is Ward take on the dangerous heavy hitter Gennady Golovkin. Golovkin has knocked out nearly all his opponents and most feel Ward’s style would make it a tough fight for Golovkin. Me personally I feel its the only fight Golovkin would get true credit for winning. Golovkin needs to move up to 168 and beat the likes of Ward, Froch, Kessler, the Dirrell brothers and beat them by knockout to get the credit for being one of the best around rather than facing the guys he is at the moment. Whether we will see Ward face Golovkin in the future is a uncertainty but Ward seems keen on that fight.
