By Allan Fox: Coming off of a 2-year layoff, welterweight Mike Jones (26-2, 19 KOs) was beat up and surprisingly stopped by Jaime Herrera (12-2, 7 KOs) in the 7th round last night in what was supposed to have been a tune-up fight for the 31-year-old Jones at Bally’s in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

The 6’0” Jones used up all of his energy in the first three rounds in trying to score a quick knockout, and when that didn’t happen, he had nothing left but fumes from the 4th round on. The fight was stopped after the 7th round by the ringside doctor. He examined the beat up looking Jones, whose left eye was swollen, and then stopped the fight.

Jones had earlier knocked Herrera down twice in the fight in dropping him once in the 2nd and another time in the 3rd with heavy shots. Herrera was lucky to make it out of the 2nd round because he was clearly hurt. Had Jones kept punching with the same authority as he had in the first three rounds, there’s no question that he would have knocked Herrera out at some point.

What was the beginning of the end for Jones was him suffering a cut over his left eye from a head clash in the 3rd round. Upon seeing his own blood, Jones slowed down his attack and seemed to be trying to keep from getting hit. Instead of continuing to fight hard, Jones looked like he lost his will to fight after the cut occurred.

Herrera picked up the pace once in the 4th after he realized that Jones didn’t seem like he wanted it any longer. Herrera rained shots to the head and body of Jones in rounds 4 through 6.

The punches didn’t have a great deal of power on them, but they didn’t need to with the way Jones was looking. He didn’t look like he wanted to be in the ring. There was a definite look of confusion and distress on Jones’ fast following the 3rd.

With this loss, Jones’ career is really up in there air at this point. This is his second consecutive knockout loss, and it’s going to be difficult for him to come back from this defeat. Losing to a guy like Herrera is especially bad because we’re not talking about a top talent. Herrera is a C-level fighter at best, and Jones was handled by him.
