Maidana: Mayweather’s not a superhuman boxer

mayBy Dan Ambrose: Marcos Maidana (35-4, 31 KOs) says he no longer sees WBA/WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr (46-0, 26 KOs) as an invincible boxer after he gave him a lot of problems last May in losing a 12 round majority decision Maidana says he now sees the 37-year-old Mayweather as no longer the great boxer that fans had him believing he was.

Maidana knows he Mayweather can be hit, and he plans on hitting him as much as possible when they face each other on September 13th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

“I learned that he’s not that great, he’s not that superhuman boxer everybody talks about,” Maidana said.

What we don’t know right now is whether Mayweather is the same fighter that Maidana did well against last May or if that was a case of Mayweather fighting to Maidana’s level to give boxing fans an entertaining fight.

Mayweather says he was trying to make it entertaining. But Maidana is convinced that Mayweather was made to look mortal because of the pressure he put on him and the heavy shots he was constantly hitting him with.

We’re going to find out if Mayweather is better than he was last time. If Mayweather isn’t able to stay in the center of the ring and box Maidana, then I think we could see an upset on September 13th.

Mayweather has lost some of his speed and his mobility in the last several years, but he’s still very fast and hard to hit with power shots. Maidana is going to need to make some adjustments in this fight, because it may not matter that Mayweather isn’t super human. He’ll still be more than good enough to beat Maidana if the Argentinian loads up with everything he throws and winds up missing with his shots all night long.

The judges were impressed last time with the amount of times Mayweather was able to make Maidana miss with his shots. Maidana could have changed all that if he’d have lightened up on his punches and aimed more of them to Mayweather’s body. But Maidana proved unable to adapt and that’s why he lost the fight.
