Marcos Maidana(Photo credit: Esther Lin/Showtime) By Chris Williams: Marcos Maidana (35-4, 31 KOs) came away from his previous fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr (46-0, 26 KOs) that he’s a fighter that can be hit, and he sees a rematch with him on September 13th as one where he’s going to be able to land his shots again but a lot more of them.

Maidana is working on his conditioning so that he won’t fade in the last 6 rounds like last time. Maidana fought well for exactly 6 rounds, and that that he was running on fumes and getting beaten to the punch by Mayweather again and again.

“I was able to pin him to the ropes and land punches, so he’s not as difficult or as invincible as people think,” Maidana said. “He’s hittable. You can land on him. I made mistakes. I was a little too anxious. He never hurt me, but he’s got a respectable punch. You’ve got to respect him.”

It sounds like Maidana’s making an excuse for him not having the talent to beat Mayweather. Saying too anxious last time sounds like a weak excuse for Maidana. You can understand someone being anxious for the first 3 minutes, but not for an entire 12 round fight.

If Maidana is having problems with his nerves then he needs to see someone about it, because there’s no excuse for him being anxious for 36 continuous minutes. When you get someone saying they’re too keyed up in a 12 round fight that tells me that they’re not able to come to terms that they don’t have the talent to win.

Mayweather was hittable because he was intentionally standing in the pocket to make it a competitive fight for the fans. Mayweather even said it himself before the fight that he was going to give the boxing fans a real gift by making it an entertaining fight.

The way that he meant that was by standing in front of Maidana and making it easy for him to land his shots. Maidana connected with some of his shots, but at the end of the day, it was Mayweather who connected with the cleaner shots and with the higher percentage of punches.

Maidana says that Mayweather never hurt him. He didn’t need to. This is boxing and you win by either knocking out your opponent or out-pointing them. Mayweather chose the latter method to beat Maidana. He didn’t need to do both.
