Kell Brook vs Shawn Porter(Photo credit: Esther Lin/Showtime) By Tom Berridge: Unbeaten Kell Brook (33-0, 22 KOs) last night became the new IBF welterweight world champion just as predicted in the eyes of many intelligent boxing fans in beating IBF 147 pound champion Shawn Porter (24-1-1, 15 KOs) by a 12 round majority decision at the StubHub Center in Carson, California. Brook absolutely schooled Porter and made him look terrible in the process of winning a 12 round decision by the scores 114-114, 117-111 and 116-112.

It was so one sided it simply reminded me of a dominant Floyd Mayweather Jr performance. Porter was coming back off an emphatic victory over Paulie Malignaggi from last April, and was being massively hyped up based on that performance and beating Devon Alexander.

Many average boxing fans simply thought Porter would blow Kell over, and most people within the sport on the American side had no clue about the amount of talent Brook is blessed with. A fighter comes over and gets dealt with easily. WRONG. Porter proved to be completely over-matched in regards to boxing skills last night. All he actually had was explosive pressure in the early rounds and he proved to be not fit enough to be able to handle the heat coming into the championship rounds.

Kell is obviously a far superior boxer and athlete and proved Porter to be massively overrated in my view. At least the fight was won fair and square with no controversy in Porters back yard with no excuses.

I believe the best path for Kell now is to simply take America by storm by taking on talents like Keith Thurman next then put himself in with a huge name like Juan Manuel Marquez or Manny Pacquiao. Once Brook gets past those two fighters, he can then face Mayweather in a unification match. I give Brook a good chance of beating Pacquiao and Marquez. Brook should forget about battling Amir Khan. It’s a pointless fight. Few boxing fans care about a Brook-Khan match-in in the UK, and especially not in the United States.

I hope that most of the people within the sport sit up and take note of Kell Brook and realize he has proved himself to be one of the best welterweights in the world!
