Kell Brook: Me and Khan can be like Froch-Groves

Kell Brook(Photo credit: Esther Lin/Showtime) By Ivan Godfrey: Kell Brook (32-0,22K`Os) has revealed that he believes that a bout between himself and fellow English welterweight Amir Khan(29-3,19 K`Os) has the potential to be as big an event as the may blockbuster between Carl Froch and George Groves. However, the fight taking place at all is of course dependent on a successful outcome to his own challenge for the IBF welterweight strap against the undefeated American champion Shawn Porter (24-0-1, 15 KOs).

Brook said, “I believe so (that it can be like Froch-Groves). A win over Porter gives me a world title and opens all the doors at the elite level. I think everyone would grab onto the Khan fight and it will be huge like Groves-Froch because there is no love lost between us”.

I agree with Brook that the fight would be huge in Britain. Khan has an extremely large fan base in the the UK which stemmed from him claiming a silver medal at the 2004 Olympics at just 17 years old. He captured the public imagination. Brook is not as well known among casual boxing fans in the UK but still has a fan base so with the right promotion and Kell Brook`s world title potentially on the line it would sell in large numbers, putting bums on seats as well as doing well in pay per view sales.

However Brook has a huge task in defeating Porter. Porter is a big welterweight who boils down to 147, and has great inside game with his usual strength advantage over his opponents. He is also exciting to watch as he keeps coming forward, wanting to fight.

Despite this i believe Brook is a bigger and stronger fighter than any of Porter`s previous opponents and he will not be simply out strengthened in the way that the relatively small Devon Alexander and Paulie Malignaggi were. Therefore I predict that Brook`s superior technical skills such as his jab and movement on the outside will prevail as Porter will not be able to simply charge at Brook and overwhelm him with his strength. I believe Brook will prevail on the night and set up a very lucrative match up with Amir `king` Khan.

All this is of course very hypothetical as Khan would likely need to be looked over once again by Floyd Mayweather and also win his tune up bout in December. However i for one hope the Brook-Khan fight does take place as it would be fantastic for British boxing and capture the imaginations of the public. I can only hope.

Either way, I suggest you tune in for the Porter-Brook fight as it will be exciting as long as it lasts with the aggressive styles of these two top level boxers.
