Golovkin ahead of Chavez Jr in Froch Facebook poll

golovkin7356By Gav Duthie: Carl Froch is giving fans the chance to have their say on who his next opponent should be.

I implore anyone who loves boxing to vote on The Cobra’s facebook page. As fans we love to analyze, praise and criticize but its not often we get a real chance to do something productive. Carl’s entire legacy and reputation has been based on giving the fans the fights they want so he will listen to what we say.

Fight Options
(voting as of 10:30am UK time August 14)

Gennady Golovkin, 12,524 votes
Julio Cesar Chavez Jnr,11,786 votes
James DeGale, 7,671 votes

It is simply a case of liking the opponent on his page. Not surprisingly DeGale is a good bit behind but as we seen with Amir Khan last year he used social media to rally votes for a fight against Mayweather over Marcos Maidana. In the end Mayweather rightly ignored the vote anyway but Froch will NOT. One of the biggest boxing gripes from fans today is not getting the fights we want. For me Gennady Golovkin is the stand out option and this is our chance to play a small part in making it happen.

James Degale 19-1 (13)

This is a non-starter for me. The risk v reward is awful for Froch. If he beats DeGale nobody will really care because although James is an exciting prospect he hasn’t really got the reputation yet. The worst thing is I think he actually has a good chance of beating Froch which would be a disaster for the man from Nottingham.

The worrying issue with the voting here is the casual British boxing fan who thinks he will be watching another Froch-Groves affair. This is not the case. At this point in time James should be concentrating on the likes of Sakio Bika and Arthur Abraham.

Julio Cesar Chavez Jnr 48-1-1 (32)

Again the casual boxing fan might look at this see the name (attributed to his father) and think this a great fight. In the boxing world very few see Chavez as anywhere near the level of GGG. Seeing as he has only lost once in 50 fights this would still be a good fight for Carl but in the last couple of years the mexican has been plagued with injury, weight issues, drug problems and controversial decisions. At present the voting between Chavez and Golovkin is very close.

Gennady Golovkin 30-0 (27)

This is the only way for Carl to cap off his career in my opinion. Carl is the guy who always entertains and always fights the dangerous fights. If he wants to remembered this way then GGG is the opponent. Golovkin is considered the most widely avoided fighter in the sport today and Froch is all about running through brick walls. I’m not really a fan of Froch’s personality or boxing ability but one cannot question his courage. Carl’s legacy is never going to be about being the finished article which means he should forget about losing to Ward again and give the fans one final toe to toe slugfest against one of the sports biggest punchers Gennady Golovkin.
