Deontay Wilder will hurt Stiverne if he lands his right hand, says Goosen

deontay999By Scott Gilfoid: Unbeaten heavyweight contender Deontay Wilder (32-0, 32 KOs) is poised to face WBC title holder Bermane Stiverne later this year once his wounded hand heals up enough for them to face each other.

While many boxing fans believe that Stiverne will win based on his superior experience, trainer Joe Goosen believes that Deontay’s power and size might be too much for Stiverne in this fight.

Goosen was able to see Deontay’s punching power close up when he knocked out his fighter Malik Scott in the 1st round earlier this year. Deontay got perfect leverage on a 1-2 combination to the head of Scott that knocked him out. There was no getting up from those punches.

Goosen thinks that Deontay will be able to have his way if Stiverne goes to the ropes like he did in his last two fights against Chris Arreola. He thinks that Stiverne will end up getting hit with something really big by Deontay if he falls back to the ropes like he’s been doing recently.

“If Chris Arreola was able to get to him [Stiverne] with those right hands, I think if Wilder lands it, he’s going to hurt Stiverne,” Goosen said to esnewsreporting.com. “I think he’s [Stiverne] going to get hit with it, and I think Wilder’s going to try and keep him at arm’s length most of the fight. If he stays on the outside, Wilder’s going to have a lot of the reach advantage. I think Deontay Wilder is a really devastating puncher. I kind of nicknamed him the Tommy Hearns of the heavyweight division.”

I agree with Goosen. Deontay reminds me of Tommy “Hit man” Hearns as well. Deontay has the same thin, wiry frame as Hearns and the same extraordinary power as him. Deontay weighs a little under 230 pounds, and yet he punches harder than guys that weight in the 250s. He’s got that Corrie Sanders type power going for him.

Stiverne is likely training to be the aggressor in training camp because his team has to know that he’s going to be torn up if he stays on the outside all night.
