Deontay Wilder vs. Jason Gavern on August 16th

deontay5698By Scott Gilfoid: #1 WBC Deontay Wilder (31-0, 31 KOs) will be facing the always tough Jason Gavern (25-16-4, 11 KOs) in a scheduled 10 round bout next week on the undercard of the Shawn Porter vs. Kell Brook fight on August 16th at the StubHub Center in Carson, California, according to Dan Rafael of ESPN.

Deontay was just added to the card last season, so you can understand why he’s not facing a top 5 guy for this fight.

This fight isn’t official yet. It’s still possible that Deontay could wind up facing someone else.

Gaven, 37, is a respectable opponent with some good scalps on his resume. He’s coming off of an impressive win over legendary fighter James Toney last November in beating hjim by a 2 round decision in the Prizefighter Tournament at the York Hall, Bethnal Green in London, UK. Gaverne has beaten Darnell Wilson, fought to a 12 round draw with Jonathon Banks and Rafael Butler.

“I’m told @BronzeBomber’s Aug. 16 opponent is Jason Gavern, who is 25-16-4 & coming off 3-rd decision win vs shot James Toney,” Rafael said on his twitter.

I really like this fight because Gavern has the kind of chin that will enable Deontay to get some badly needed rounds in. He’s been knocking everybody out in the 1st round lately, and he needs to work on his stamina to make sure that when he eventually does get taken the distance then he’ll be ready for it.

Gavern hasn’t been knocked out since last year when he was stopped in the 1st round by the hard hitting Amir Mansour in April of 2013. Before that, he was stopped by Lucas Brown, Leif Larsen and Alexander Ustinov in 2012. Those are all respectable punchers.

If Deontay can knock Gavern out in the 1st round, it would be saying a lot about his punching power. It would be his 19th knockout in the 1st round during his 6-year pro career. Deontay is heading for a perfect 50-0 with 50 knockout record in the future.

The Gaven fight is just a stay busy fight for Deontay to get him ready for his November title shot against WBC heavyweight champion Bermane Stiverne. Deontay wanted to get in another fight so that he’s not out of the ring 8-9 months by the time he faces Stiverne.

The last time Deontay fought was in March of this year in knocking out Malik Scott in the 1st round.

Deontay’s fight against Gavern likely won’t be televised because the card already has the following fights that will be televised on Showtime: Omar Figueroa vs. Daniel Estrada, Anthony Dirrell vs. Sakio Bika and Porter vs. Brook. The Deontay-Gavern fight will likely be off television.
