dirrell445By Scott Gilfoid: #8 WBC Andre Dirrell (22-1, 15 KOs) is a possibility for the October 8th card at the Beau Rivage waterfront resort in Biloxi, Mississippi. This is the card that is tentatively head-lined by Sam Soliman vs. Jermain Taylor.

It’s unknown now if that fight will happen due to Taylor’s recent shooting incident. The facts are still be learned about the Taylor shooting case, so there’s a chance that he could still be fighting in the main event against Soliman on October 8th.

Having the talented Andre Dirrell on the Taylor-Soliman card will greatly enhance the card, and he’s popular enough to slide into the main event if the Taylor-Soliman fight doesn’t take place. Dirrell just needs a quality opponent to face and he’d be the perfect replacement for the main event.

Dirrell is coming off of an impressive 5th round stoppage win over Vladine Biosse early this month on August 1st in a fight that was televised by ESPN. Dirrell hadn’t fought in a year and half before the fight due to promotional and other issues, but he looked better than he ever has before.

Dirrell’s fighting style is a lot more offensively oriented nowadays, but he still has his superb defensive skills going for him.

Dirrell would be undefeated now if he hadn’t lost a controversial 12 round split decision to British fighter Carl Froch in the Super Six tournament in 2009 in a fight that took place in Froch’s hometown in Nottingham, UK.

I scored the fight 8 rounds to 3 with 1 even for Dirrell. He was too fast for Froch in the fight, and put on a boxing clinic in dominating the action until Froch started fouling from the 5th round until the 11th.

Dirrell, a former 2004 Olympic bronze medalist from the United States, says he’s game to fight Froch in a rematch now if he’s up for it. Dirrell doesn’t mind working for the title shot if he has to, but he wants to avenge it.

I don’t know that Froch is going to ever bother fighting Dirrell again. I mean, if Froch isn’t interested in fighting Andre Ward again, then I can’t see him wanting to get back in the ring with Dirrell, because he arguably beat Froch better than Ward did.
