Adrien Broner vs. Lamont Peterson not happening, says Golden Boy

broner67By Dan Ambrose: Former three division world champion Adrien Broner (28-1, 22 KOs) reportedly posted an instagram message today saying that he’ll be facing IBF light welterweight champion Lamont Peterson on October 18th.

A lot of boxing fans took Broner to be serious about the post, and they got excited about the fight. But as it turns out, Broner was playing an April fools type joke on August 25th. Dan Rafael of ESPN said that Golden Boy Promotions says that Broner won’t be fighting Peterson on October 18th.

“According to Golden Boy Boxing, there is zero truth to the rumor that Adrien Broner is fighting King Pete on October 18,” Rafael said on his twitter.

You would think that if Broner was going to come up with a whopper of a phony fight, he could have come up with something better than this. Danny Garcia or Lucas Matthysse would be far better alternatives than Peterson if Broner wanted to mess with people.

The interest in the Broner-Peterson fight tells you that boxing fans aren’t too excited about Broner’s September 6th fight against Emmanuel Taylor (18-2, 12 KOs) at the U.S. Bank Arena, inCincinnati, Ohio, USA. Boxing fans are rarely talking about this fight.

I’m not sure if that’s what Broner’s adviser Al Haymon was expecting when he made the Broner-Taylor fight. There’s no way for boxing fans to get interested in a fight between Broner and a guy who was recently schooled by Chris Algieri. Taylor easily lost a 10 round decision to Algieri last February. Taylor was able to come back from the defeat to squeak by Karim Mayfield in beating him by a narrow 10 round decision last July.

Broner needs to step it up again because he’s just killing time with his mismatches against the likes of Taylor and Carlos Molina. Broner lost his WBA welterweight title to Marcos Maidana last December in losing a 12 round decision. Broner moved down in weight to 140 in response to the loss and defeated Molina by a dull 10 round decision last May.
