By Chris Williams: WBA/WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr (46-0, 26 KOs) and Marcos Maidana (35-4, 31 KOs) will be putting the finishing touches on their 5-city press tour today in meeting in Los Angeles at 1 p.m PT at Pershing Square, 532 S Olive Street, Los Angeles, Calif. 90013.

Thus far the two fighters have done a great job promoting their September 13th rematch at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. But as we saw in their last stop in San Antonio, Texas, Maidana is starting to show signs of anger and perhaps frustration with Mayweather getting to him with his barbs.

Maidana shoved Mayweather hard twice during their face off despite Mayweather not even touching him. Mayweather simply stood close to Maidana, which is something he’s done on many previous occasions during their face offs. But this time Maidana had problems with it and chose to push Mayweather roughly twice.

You can’t see things like that and not think that Maidana is starting to feel the negative effects of Mayweather having gotten into his mind to where he’s questioning himself. Maidana needs to keep it together because there’s still many months to go before they square off in the ring on September 13th, and we can’t have him making a mess of their future one-on-one meetings because he’s having problems with Mayweather being in the near proximity.

Maidana has his work cut out for him in this fight because Mayweather already proved in their previous fight that he can still beat Maidana even when fighting his fight in going toe-to-toe. Maidana failed to beat Mayweather even with him standing directly in front of him. Believe me, the rematch is going to be a completely different fight with Mayweather using nonstop movement in playing a hit and move affair.

It’s now going to put the pressure on Maidana to show that he can adapt to Mayweather’s real fighting style. We saw that Maidana failed to beat him with Mayweather giving him a handicap, but now the question is can Maidana beat Mayweather with him removing the handicap and fighting the way he always has? I don’t think it bodes well for Maidana.

His trainer Robert Garcia is going to need to come up with the best possible fight plan, and Maidana is going to need to follow it to perfection for him to even be competitive in this fight. I’m not talking about Maidana beating Mayweather. I’m talking about him being competitive with him. First Maidana will need to be able to prove that he can be competitive, and then go from there.

If he can make it close then he might be able to try and score a knockout late in the fight if Mayweather wears down. I don’t see that happening, but that’s what we’re looking at in this fight. Maidana needs do everything perfect for him to win and that’s going to be nearly impossible for him due to the limitations that he has in terms of hand speed, mobility and stamina. If he comes up short in any one of those areas on September 13th, then he’s going to be sent down to a crashing defeat.
