By Chris Williams: In his latest training video from today, WBA/WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr (46-0, 26 KOs) is looking like he’s in top condition and ready to step inside the ring right now to face Marcos Maidana (35-4-31, KOs) in a rematch.

Mayweather’s hand speed and power are both looking superb, as you can tell from the video. If you look carefully, you’ll see Mayweather loading up on big shots to the lower part of the bag.

That’s a good sign that he plans on using a more concerted effort at going after Maidana’s weak spot – his body. Maidana can’t handle body shots, and that seems to be the area where Mayweather is going to focus on for their rematch on September 13th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

It’s hard to understand why Maidana has problems taking body shots. It might be that he forgets about his defense when he’s throwing his own power shots. He forgets about bracing for the body shots, and he ends up getting hurt by them.

Mayweather didn’t go after Maidana’s body in a huge way last May in their previous fight, but I have a feeling that he means business this time and is going to fill Maidana’s basement, as ESPN commentator Teddy Atlas puts it, by going after Maidana’s body from the first round to take the fight out of him. Mayweather won’t even need to waste energy moving around the ring if he focuses exclusively on throwing to the body of Maidana.

We’ve already heard Maidana’s plans in how he plans on trying to beat Mayweather. He wants to place his punches better, not stand too close in order to avoid smothering his own shots, and to use more pressure. Maidana’s trainer Robert Garcia says that he’s going to be rougher in the rematch to make it even more difficult for Mayweather in terms of Maidana trying to rough him up.

The only way that works is if the referee turns a blind eye to the fouling and just lets Maidana get away with it for 12 rounds. With the attention that Mayweather has put on the fouling during the recent 5-city media tour, I have a feeling that whichever referee that works the fight on September 13th is going to be making sure that Maidana plays it clean. We could see Maidana lose points in this fight if he fails to heed the referee’s instructions.
