macklin534By Scott Gilfoid: Matchroom Sport promoter Eddie Hearn says he’s going to be making an announcement this Monday about who #7 WBO, #9 WBC, #11 WBA Matthew Macklin’s next opponent will be for his fight August 30th next month at the National Stadium in Dublin, Ireland.

Hearn says that the guy that he’s matching the 32-year-old Macklin up against will put him into him back into the world title picture.

Hearn said on his twitter “Made a great fight for Matt Macklin, victory puts him right back in the thick of things! Full card announced tomorrow- tickets on sale Tuesday.”

This is the card in which #8 WBO Andy Lee will be on the card. Hearn is reportedly looking to set Lee and Macklin up against each other for a fight that could take place later this year, although it’s possible Hearn could change up those plans if he can get a title shot for either of them straightaway.

Macklin has lost 3 out of his last 5 fights, and it’s very hard to believe that he could be back into the world title picture off of a win next month. I mean, it’s got to be someone really good that Hearn is matching Macklin up against for him to be into the thick of things at middleweight, don’t you think?

If Hearn springs some obscure name that few fans have ever heard of, I don’t think it’s going to convince anyone that Macklin deserves another title shot. Heck, he’s already had three world title shots in the past three years, losing all three of them to Felix Sturm, Sergio Martinez and Gennady Golovkin.

Macklin’s last two title shots have ended with him getting knocked out. How many more chances is Macklin going to get? Macklin won his last fight against Lamar Russ in beating him by a 10 round decision last December, but he did not look impress in that fight.

Hearn is going to need to match Macklin up against a top 10 contender for it to be a “great fight,” as he says it will be for him. Dragging out some old fighter to face Macklin isn’t going to do the trick. We saw how Hearn got everyone excited about Kell Brook’s last couple of fights ahead of time and then coming up with 37-year-old Vyacheslav Senchenko and some guy named Alvaro Robles for him to fight instead of high level opposition.
