chilemba32By Scott Gilfoid: #2 WBC, #9 IBF light heavyweight contender Isaac Chilemba (22-2, 9 KO’s) vs. Cory Cummings (17-6-1, 13 KO’s) has been added to the August 2nd undercard of WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev’s title defense against Blake Caparello at the Revel Resort in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The Chilemba-Cummings fight will be the co-feature bout on the Kovalev-Caparello card.

It’s not a great fight, but a decent one. Chilemba should be able to take care of the 34-year-old Cummings without too many problems. Cummings is coming into this fight having lost his last two fights to Azea Augustama and William Joppy. That’s never a good sign when your opponent in the co-feature has lost his last two fights.

The Chilemba-Cummings fight is scheduled for 10 rounds, and it’s possible it’ll go the distance because Chilemba isn’t much of a puncher.
Chilema recently fought Tony Bellew twice in losing one of the bouts and fighting to a draw in the other. Chilemba fought well enough to deserve decision wins in both fights, but he was up against it in fighting in Bellew’s home country for both fights. He needed to go above and beyond simply outclassing him, and instead he should have been thinking knockout all the way.

In Chilemba’s last two fights, he’s beaten Michael Gbenga and Denis Grachev by lopsided decisions. Chilemba especially shined in the Grachev fight in beating him by the scores of 99-91, 99-91 and 100-90 last March.

Chilemba said this about the Cummings fight: “Come August 2 I will be fully charged and ready to claim victory. I take all my opponents seriously as each one takes me a step closer to realizing my dream of the world title, so Cory Cummings should not for one minute think that I am coming unprepared!”

With Chilmeba fighting on the Kovalev-Caparello undercard, you have to wonder whether we may be soon seeing a fight between him and the hard hitting Russian Kovalev. I think it would be a great fight. If Chilemba was able to neutralize Bellew’s power and have him eating out of the palm of his hand in their two fights, you have to wonder whether Chilemba can do the same thing with Kovalev.
