By Daniel Hughes: This Saturday night 12th July at the York Hall, Bethnal Green, London, a fight that to this writer sees as probably the best non-televised fight in years, here in the UK. Richard Commey, (17-0, 17 KOs) and Gary Buckland (28-4, 9 KOs) square off for the vacant Commonwealth lightweight title.
The show promoted by Goodwin promotions is a sellout, and rightly so. It is a fight that has gone under the radar in terms of what both fighters bring to the table, action, excitement, almost mandatory on what I have seen from both fighters.
Richard Commey, dynamite in both hands from Accra, Ghana, and has certainly been avoided it seems, as many ranked lightweights have looked to take other routes than face him for the vacant belt. The African fighter, following a long line of famous fighters from that region, always looking to win inside the distance as his record would back up. He is well rated within boxing circles, and Saturday will provide a stern test of how far he can possibly go. He is certainly stepping up a level against Gary Buckland, coming off the back of two fantastic fights against Gavin Rees, winning and then losing by split-decision. Buckland fights at high intensity with regards punch output. He will no doubt try to set a pace for the hard hitting Ghanaian to stay with. Buckland against Rees showed what he has always bring to the table, intensity, both contests riveting. I expect Saturday to be no different.
The fight fans here in the UK that had the pleasure of watching Buckland against Rees have already shortlisted both fights as potentially domestic fight of the year. The real shame for this writer is that Saturday’s fight is not available to mainstream boxing fans, via television. The small hall promotions are the lifeblood of boxing, not just here in the UK, but worldwide. Fight fans looking to see the upcoming stars or domestic 50-50 fights, you really do get value for money at these shows.
York Hall, London is an iconic venue for UK fight fans and the fighters themselves. Atmospheric venue, fans close to the action it is set up for boxing. It really is a fight that deserves keeping an eye out for, those that have a ticket, I believe won’t be left disappointed.
