Broner-Taylor & Matthysse-Ortiz on 9/6 on Showtime

broner621By Dan Ambrose: Showtime will be televising a card on September 6th with Adrien Broner (28-1, 22 KO’s) fighting ESPN favorite Emmanuel Taylor 18-2, 12 KOs) and Lucas Matthysse (35-3, 33 KOs) fighting Roberto Ortiz (31-0-1, 24 KOs) from the U.S. Bank Arena, in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA.

Matthysse’s opponent still hasn’t been finalized. Mike Perez has also been mentioned as a possibility for Matthysse to fight as well.

This card is similar to the Showtime August 9th Danny Garcia vs. Rod Salka and Lamont Peterson vs. Edgar Santana where Garcia and Peterson are fighting weaker opposition to possibly set up a fight between them later this year or possibly not at all. Emanuel Taylor doesn’t have the punching power to hurt Broner, which is obviously why he was picked out by Broner’s adviser.

Former IBF/WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto is also supposed to be on the card, but his opponent hasn’t been selected yet.

Taylor and Broner is obviously a more competitive fight than Salka-Garcia will be, but it’s still the same situation where Broner and Matthysse are fighting other opponents instead of facing each other. There’s no word yet whether their adviser Al Haymon, who set up the fights, will be looking to match Broner and Matthysse up against each other in the near future.

Broner’s career is kind of up in the air right now after his controversial win over Paulie Malignaggi and his loss to Marcos Maidana in 2013. Broner was able to win his last fight against Carlos Molina, but he looked poor in that fight and nothing like one of the top fighters in the 140 pound division.

If Haymon is going to rebuild Broner, he’s going to need to keep him on a soft diet for as long as possible so that he improve enough to compete for a world title at 140. Right now it would be tough for Broner if he were to get in the ring against the likes of Danny Garcia, Chris Algieri, Lamont Peterson and Jessie Vargas. All of those fighters would have a great chance of beating him.

Matthysse’s stock has dropped since his loss to Garcia last year in September. Matthysse came back and had to struggle hard to defeat John Molina by an 11th round last April. Matthysse was knocked down twice by Molina, and the fight proved to be a very difficult one for Matthysse.

It’s not likely that Haymon will bother matching Matthysse up against Broner later this year, because Haymon will want to keep both guys winning until they get title shots. He’s not going to put two of his fighters in against each other.
