Bellew: Geale will be sickened by Golovkin’s body punches

geale5(Photo credit: Will Hart, K2 Promotions) By Scott Gilfoid: Former world title challenger Tony Bellew isn’t giving Australian Daniel Geale (30-2, 16 KOs) much of a chance for his title challenge this Saturday night against WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (29-0, 26 KOs).

Bellew sees Golovkin hurting the 33-year-old Geale with his body punching much in the same way that Golovkin obliterated Matthew Macklin with a left to the body in their fight in June of 2013. Macklin was left on the canvas grabbing his midsection with a look of excruciating pain after getting hit hard to the body by Golovkin.

“I don’t think it’ll be an early finish because I think Golovkin’s at the stage where he says ‘you know what, these early fights do me no good,’” Bellew said to Skysports.com. “I see it going between six and eight and I think Geale will be sickened with the body punches, with the head punches, and I think it’ll be Goodnight Vienna.”

It’s hard to argue with that. Geale is pretty much out of his class in this fight. It’s nice that he was willing to take the fight, because a lot of guys don’t want any part of Golovkin. But with that said, Geale is the sacrificial lamb about to be slaughtered by Golovkin in this fight. In every interview that Geale has given, he doesn’t look confident at all.

Even when Geale says he believes he’s going to beat Golovkin, Geale has a look on his face that seems to suggest that he doesn’t believe his own words. That obviously isn’t good. But even if Geale was one of those guys that has an ego that makes him think he can walk on water, he’d still be in for a real thrashing by Golovkin.

Self-belief means nothing when you don’t have the talent to get the job done. A fighter with an out of control ego is a guy that is probably going to be too clueless to realize when he’s out of his depth. At least with Geale, he doesn’t seem to be one of those types, so this fight will likely have the plug pulled out of it early.

Of all the fighters in the middleweight division that you would think that might cause Golovkin some problems, Bellew thinks Martin Murray would give him issues. Murray is the guy that couldn’t beat an injured former WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez last year when they fought in April of 2013 in Argentina. Instead of going after the injured Martinez, Murray spent much of the fight covering up like a sparring partner. His lack of punch output led to him losing what could have been a winnable fight for him.

“He’d [Murray] cause Golovkin problems,” Bellew said about Murray.

I disagree completely. If Murray came into the fight with Golovkin using his high guard like he did against Sergio Martinez, Golovkin would nail him in the midsection immediately and we’d likely see the fight stopped in the 1st round. It would be over immediately, because Murray tends to stand in front of his opponents rather than use movement. And with him using a sparring partner type of fighting style with him just covering up, Golovkin would tear his midsection apart. And if Murray dropped his guard, he’s get obliterated with a head shot. Of course, I don’t see Murray ever fighting Golovkin because he would have to travel to the U.S for that fight to take place, and I don’t see that happening.
