Maidana’s manager expects to know by next week about Mayweather fight in September

maidana77By Allan Fox: Sebastian Contursi, the manager for former two division world champion Marcos Maidana (35-4, 31 KO’s), says he expects to know by next week if Maidana will be facing WBA/WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr (46-0, 26 KO’s) next in September or not. Mayweather needs to make a decision soon in order to start attracting interest in his next fight.

Mayweather waited too long for his previous fight before finally picking Maidana as his opponent, and he can’t afford to do that a second time if he wants to get the most pay-per-view buys possible.

“We’re waiting for news. Maidana wants the rematch with Mayweather, but all of a sudden Pacquiao’s name was thrown in,” Contursi said. “Hopefully next week we’ll have something already written.”

Maidana lost a controversial 12 round majority decision to Mayweather last May by the scores of 116-112, 117-111 for Mayweather, and 114-114. It was a fight where Maidana roughed up Mayweather by taking the fight to him, and using a number of different methods to work Mayweather over along the ropes.

It worked well for Maidana, because he connected with more shots on Mayweather than any fighter has done since Mayweather’s two fights against Jose Luis Castillo over a decade ago. The close fight didn’t sit too well with Mayweather, who said afterwards that he would fight Maidana again and show the fans that it can be an easy fight when he’s using his boxing skills.

If Mayweather decides not to fight Maidana again, then it’s quite possible that Mayweather will elect to get a rematch against either Miguel Cotto or Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. Those are the only guys that will bring in a guaranteed huge payday for Mayweather. Danny Garcia’s name has been mentioned, but he’s not ready to fight Mayweather yet because he still hasn’t had a warmup bout at welterweight to get him ready for what he’d be facing against Mayweather. Garcia’s father Angel isn’t going to let him get put in with mayweather before he’s ready, because he feels that Danny is going to be a big start for many years and he doesn’t want to have his star power diminished by having him fight Mayweather before he’s ready.
