Kell Brook: A victory over Porter will lead to Mayweather and Pacquiao

brook45453By Scott Gilfoid: #1 IBF Kell Brook (32-0, 22 KO’s) will be fighting for a world title on August 9th against IBF welterweight champion Shawn Porter (24-0-1, 15 KO’s) at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. This is Brook’s moment in the sun, because he blew his chance a year ago for a title shot against former IBF 147-pound champion Devon Alexander when his body kept breaking down on him during training camp with him suffering one injury after another.

Whether the cause of the injury was just bad luck or perhaps the stress of the moment getting to him, it’s unclear. But Brook is now getting another chance at the IBF belt, and he can’t afford to blow it this time.

Brook believes that if he beats Porter on August 9th, it’ll put him into the equation for fights against Floyd Mayweather Jr and Manny Pacquiao. That would be surprising if that were the case, because Brook will still be a guy who has been seen only twice by U.S audiences, and it’s not likely that casual boxing fans will know or care about him enough to get excited at the prospects of him being an opponent for Mayweather or Pacquiao.

“I’m looking to impress in New York and take him out. This win will propel me on to the big stage, and there will be talk of Mayweather and Pacquiao once I’ve taken this guy apart,” Brook said to RingTV.com.

I’d be very surprised if Brook can get passed Porter in this fight, because he’s so much better than anyone that Brook has ever faced before during his 10-year pro career. Brook turned pro in 2004, and even as of 2014, he was still pretty much facing the same level of competition that he’d been fighting at the start of his career. His different promoters have brought Brook along so slowly that he’s arguably wasted the last 6 years of his career, because he’s basically the same fighter now that he was back in 2008.

They should have put Brook in with world class opposition back then because at least they would have found out by now if he has the talent to be a world champion or judge another contender in the division.

Brook is going to have problems with the pressure and inside fighting skills that Porter possesses because most of the guys that Brook has fought during his career have fought with the traditional European style with them staying on the outside and jabbing and throwing pot shots. Brook has never faced anyone with any kind of inside fighting skills, and he’s now shown the ability to fight in close. As such, I have a feeling he’s going to take a beating in this fight and end up getting knocked out by Porter.
