Erislandy Lara: I’m going to bust Canelo in the mouth on July 12th

Lara says the first thing he wants to do when the fight starts is to smash the 23-year-old Canelo in the mouth.

“I guarantee 100 percent I’m going to win the fight,” Lara said. “I’m going to bust his [Canelo] mouth on July 12. I guarantee.”

Lara also wonders what happened to Alfredo Angulo in his fight with Canelo last March. Angulo looked incredibly weak, and looked nothing like he’d ever looked before. His power was completely gone for some reason. Lara isn’t saying that Angulo threw the fight, but he is saying he looked really bad and nothing like before when he fought him a year earlier.

“It was a bad fight,” Lara said in speaking about the Canelo-Angulo fight. “It wasn’t the same Angulo. [It was a] completely different fighter. 100 percent he wasn’t there in shape. He wasn’t the same fighter.”

Lara went on to say that Canelo wouldn’t have agreed to fight him if he hadn’t shamed him on twitter by trash talking him so that boxing fans could see that he wasn’t agreeing to fight him. Lara feels that Canelo has hand-picked his opponents for most of his career, and he says not done this. Lara doesn’t understand why Canelo has selected his opponents carefully instead of facing the best opponents.

We’re going to find out what these two fighters are made of on July 12th. If Lara loses, then he’ll still have his WBA junior middleweight title to fall back on because Canelo didn’t want to fight for that belt. At least that way Lara will continue to be champion, and will likely remain the WBA champ for a long time to come given the weak opposition the WBA has ranked in their top 15. But if Canelo loses the fight, he’s going to be really bad off because it’ll mess up his plans for a fight against Miguel Cotto, and make things messy for a rematch against Floyd Mayweather Jr.

It’s likely that Canelo will end up facing both of those guys anyway, because the chances are that the casual boxing fans won’t even be aware that Canelo was beaten by Lara. But Canelo will definitely lose a lot of clout with the hardcore fans if he gets beaten by Lara.
