froch332By Scott Gilfoid: Top Rank promoter Bob Arum will be meeting with Matchroom Sport promoter Eddie Hearn this Saturday to discuss a potential big fight for later this year between IBF/WBA super middleweight champion Carl Froch (33-2, 24 KO’s) and former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr in a fight that could take place in November or December if the fight gets made.

Hearn will be at the Demetrius Andrade vs. Brian Rose fight at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, because he’ll be watching his fighter Rose attempt to upset the odds against the highly talented Andrade.

“Eddie will be in Brooklyn this weekend, because he has Rose fighting Andrade. So he and Carl will talk, and they he will call me up,” said Arum to RingTV.com. “Hopefully, we’ll have some sort of tentative understanding. But it is only at that point that I can make a proposal to Chavez on the prospect.”

Chavez Jr is said to be very interested in the Froch fight for some reason. Chavez Jr obviously sees something in Froch’s style that he feels he can exploit, perhaps his lack of an inside game and his low left hand. I must admit, it’s a dream match-up for Chavez Jr, because he’s got the perfect opponent for him to shine against. We’re talking Andy Lee 2.0 in this fight due to Froch being right in front of Chavez Jr for as long as it lasts instead of someone who will run from his power and his devastating body shots.

Whether the Froch-Chavez Jr fight gets made could come down to whether Top Rank puts language into the contract about Chavez Jr needing to sign an extension before the fight can be made. If that’s the case, then its likely Chavez Jr will pass on the fight. Chavez Jr wouldn’t be passing on the fight because he’s afraid of Froch. Rather he would be choosing not to take it because he wouldn’t want to sign an extension.

Chavez Jr would be a very, very tough fight for Froch because he would be facing the first body puncher of his career, and he would be doing at the ripe age of 37. Chavez Jr is only 28, and in his prime. His body punching is out of this world at 168, and unless you’re a fighter who grew up fighting body punchers then you’re going to be in trouble against a guy like Chavez Jr.

Froch wouldn’t be able to depend on Chavez Jr running from him or folding up after the first big right hand connects to his chin the way that George Groves did in his loss to Froch last month at the Wembley Stadium. Chavez Jr. would be standing in there and taking Froch’s best shots while firing back pure fire to his midsection.

I can’t see being able to take Chavez Jr’s body punching. We saw Froch struggle badly with the inside fighting skills of Andre Ward in their fight in 2011, but Chavez Jr is arguably far superior inside fighter than Ward is. Froch would be taken to school in this fight by Chavez Jr and it could be brutal.
