By Jim Dower: WBC light heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson (23-1, 20 KO’s) successfully weighed in on Friday for his title defense on Saturday night against #1 WBO, #3 WBC, Andrzej Fonfara (25-2, 15 KO’s) for their fight at the Bell Centre, in Montreal, Canada. Stevenson weighed in at 173.5 lbs. The 26-year-old Fonfara weighed in slightly heavier at 174.5.

“It’ll be the same thing for me – a knockout,” Stevenson said after the weigh-in. “Exciting fights and exciting knockouts. I will be winning by a knockout so Showtime will see my Superman punch. Don’t move. Don’t go take a beer, because it will end quick.”

Fonfara, 6’2”, has the deck stacked against him in this fight because he’s not very fast, and he’s got an upright fighting style that is going to make him very easy for Stevenson to hit with his jarring left hands. The only things that Fonfara has going for him in this fight is his punch resistance and his good power. He’s not a big puncher, but he’s got respectable power when he sits down on his shots. The problem is that if he tries to load up, Fonfara will be more vulnerable to the counter punches that Stevenson likes to throw.

If Fonfara wants to last long in this fight then he’s going to need to play it safe by throwing a lot of jabs and staying out of range of Stevenson’s big shots. Stevenson can throw punches from a long ways away and still land with high accuracy due to his hand speed, but he’s more dangerous when his opponents get close.

In the co-feature, middleweight fringe contender David Lemieux (31-2, 29 KO’s) weighed in at 159.5 lbs. for his fight against Fernando Guerrero (26-2, 19 KO’s). Lemieux weighed in at 159.5 lbs. and looked in good shape. For his part, Guerrero weighed in at 159 lbs.

This is a fight that Lemieux really needs to win if his promoters are going to be able to do anything with him. He’s been taking it easy for the past three years since his loss to Joachim Alcine, and he’s just now being moved back up a little against Guerrero. If Lemieux can’t beat Guerrero, then it’s hard to say what Lemieux’s promoters will be able to do with him. This is a guy that Lemieux needs to be able to beat if he’s to be a fringe contender in the middleweight division.
