Viktor Postol would give Danny Garcia a lot of problems

postol6By Dan Ambrose: It looks like WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia (28-0, 16 KO’s) is moving up in weight just in time because if he were to keep his WBC title, he’d be soon forced to defend his title against #1 WBC Viktor Postol (26-0, 11 KO’s). After how easily the 5’11” Postol handled #2 WBC Selcuk Aydin (26-3, 19 KO’s) last night in stopping him in the 11th round in a one-sided fashion, Garcia would have a lot of problems with Postol and it’s quite likely he would lose to him if that fight were to be made.

Garcia has talked about vacating his 140 lb. titles but he still hasn’t officially done it. Some boxing fans think he may be a little torn about whether he should take the plunge and move up to 147, because at that weight he wouldn’t have a size advantage over his opponents like he’s had at 140.

Garcia’s father Angel Garcia wants him to stay at 140, as he thinks he doesn’t need to move up to welterweight yet because he’s still able to make the weight at 140. Angel’s a smart guy, and he likely realizes that Garcia doesn’t match up well against guys like Shawn Porter and Keith Thurman, two fighters that he would have little choice but to fight if he moves up in weight.

If Mayweather doesn’t give Garcia a fight, he’ll need to fight Thurman and/or Porter if he wants to try and win a title. But with the emergence of Postol, Garcia is in a tough situation even if he stays at 140. Garcia is only 5’8”, and he’s coming off of a controversial 12 round majority decision in his last fight against Maurcio Herrera last March in a fight that very few fans felt he won that fight. In his fight before that, Garcia clinched and ran his way to a decision against Lucas Matthysse.

If Garcia hadn’t clinched and moved all night, he likely would have lost the fight because he was taking heavy punishment from Matthysse each time he was actually fighting and not holding or moving.

If Garcia does vacate his WBA and WBC light welterweight titles, then Postol will likely be fighting Lucas Matthysse for the vacant titles. That’ll be a great fight, and a good test for Matthysse to show whether he can stay on top of Postol and not let him run the ring throwing his constant shots. Postol doesn’t have any power, but he throws massive amounts of punches, and he could give Matthysse problems.
