khan53322By Allan Fox: Despite the retirement talk from Floyd Mayweather Jr. about this possibly being his last fight of his career this Saturday night against Marcos Maidana, Amir Khan (28-3, 18 KO’s) still believes he’ll be able to get a fight against Mayweather if he shines bright against Luis Collazo (35-5-, 18 KO’s) this Saturday night in their clash at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. Golden Boy Promotions matched Khan against Collazo, with the chance that he might get a fight against Mayweather if he impresses fans enough and interests the huge star.

“If I put in a great performance [against Collazo], Floyd will have no other choice but to fight me,” Khan said to BoxNation.

It’s a pity that Khan was given just the Collazo fight to try and impress fans – and Mayweather – because it’s going to make Khan’s worth that much harder, because he doesn’t have a big name to really wow the fans and Mayweather. Golden Boy should have been willing to take more chances with Khan if they wanted to increase his chances of getting the Mayweather fight. Picking out a fighter like Collazo won’t give Khan a big enough name for him to impress fans/Mayweather the way it would be if they had him fighting the likes of Keith Thurman, Shawn Porter, Danny Garcia and Lucas Matthysse.

If they want Khan to get a fight against the best fighter in boxing in Mayweather then they should have been willing to let Khan face the top welterweights like Porter and Thurman. If Khan couldn’t pass the test against those guys then he wouldn’t deserve a fight against Mayweather.

Khan needs to look for a quick knockout on Saturday because that’s the best way to impress fans and Mayweather. Beating Collazo by a decision won’t be good enough, as he’s not considered to be in the same class as Thurman and Porter. Khan needs a big win, and then he should look to setup a fight against Thurman or Porter later on this year if Mayweather doesn’t agree to fight him straightaway.

Khan thinks he’s got Mayweather all figured out in how to beat him. Khan said “You box him with speed, movement, accuracy. You box him, you don’t try to fight him. That’s where most people go wrong. They think the way to beat Floyd Mayweather is to put constant pressure on him…The way to beat him is to box him, make him come forward and miss.”
