Frank Buglioni vs. Sam Couzens on July 16th at York Hall, Bethnal Green

By Scott Gilfoid: Former WBO European super middleweight champion Frank Buglioni (12-1, 9 KO’s) will be trying to turn his career around on July 16th in a fight against journeyman Sam Couzens (11-12-1, 3 KO’s) in a fight for the vacant British Southern Area super middleweight title at York Hall, Bethnal Green, London, UK. Buglioni, 25, is coming off of a 6th round TKO loss to Sergey Khomitsky last April in a fight in which Buglioni was really pummeled from pillar to post.

The 6’1″ Buglioni came into the fight highly hyped as a fighter who was going some place due to his good punching power, but he just couldn’t handle getting hit back. I mean, Buglioni might have done better against Khomitsky if he had been facing decent quality opposition in previous fights, but he went from facing opposition that I would describe as horrible to facing a pretty decent fighter in Khomitsky, and he just wasn’t ready for that kind of a fighter.

Now it looks like the knee jerk reaction by his management is to pull him back and put him in with the easy guys once again, which I think is the the wrong way to do it. Instead of putting him back in with more journeyman level guys like the ones he built his inflated resume with, Buglioni needs to be put in with opposition just a shade below Khomitsky in the talent department. I hate to say it, but Couzens is not just a shade below Khomitsky in talent. He’s more like several levels below him. They brought Buglioni back to D level opposition instead of putting him in with a sub B type opponent.

“It was a hard lesson to learn, but I’m still here, I’ve learnt from it and I’m more determined than ever to reach my goal of becoming world champion,” Said Buglioni. “There are no excuses from me, I wasn’t at my best and I got caught with some good shots by him. Now I’ve got to prove my strength of character to myself and my fans that I can come back bigger and better.”
