Adrien Broner says he wants Pacquiao before he retires

broner`11By Dan Ambrose: After last night’s one-sided 10 round unanimous decision over a over-matched Carlos Molina (17-2-1, 7 KO’s), Adrien Broner (28-1, 22 KO’s) gave a profanity laced interview with Showtime commentator Jim Gray where Broner said he doesn’t make his fights but one fight he’d like to take is against Manny Pacquiao. The interview ended at that point, because Pacquiao fights on Showtime’s rival network HBO and the chances of Broner getting his wish for a Pacquiao fight were entirely unrealistic.

“As you can see I didn’t really go through any trouble in the fight,” Broner said. “It was a sparring match on TV. At the end of the day I’m still Adrien Broner. Anyone can get it, Africans, I just beat the [expletive] out of a Mexican. At the end of the day I don’t make my fights; I’m just a fighter. I will fight anybody, and I want Manny Pacquiao before he leaves.”

For Broner to get the fight against Pacquiao, he’ll likely need to wait until his contract with Golden Boy expires, and then sign a contract with Top Rank in order to get the fight with the aging Filipino star. The chances of Broner getting the shot before Pacquiao retires are less than zero. But by mentioning Pacquiao’s name repeatedly in interviews, Broner is getting attention in a way that he normally wouldn’t be getting. Name dropping is a shortcut route for fighters to become popular without having to take risky fights.

Broner was already exposed by Marcos Maidana last December, and he showed nothing last night in beating Molina that would indicate that he’s improved in any way. Broner had limited opponent with no power in the ring with him in Carlos Molina, and yet he was unable to score a knockout. Broner did win by the scores of 100-90, 99-91, and 98-92. However, he was hit a lot by Molina and he made the fight look difficult at times with his sloppy defense and his constant showboating.

Broner out-landed Molina 237 to 150 with a connect percentage of 39% to Molina’s 22%. Broner’s last of huge power, speed and combination punching was a problem last night. Good light welterweights like Lucas Matthysse and Danny Garcia likely would have knocked Molina out last night had they been in the ring with him, but Broner couldn’t do anything with him.

Broner spent much of the fight needlessly taunting Molina. It didn’t make a lot of sense because Molina was just some 3rd tier fighter that Golden Boy dug up to make Broner look good. There was no point in Broner trying to make the guy look bad. In the 3rd round, Broner body slammed Molina really hard on the canvas in a wrestling move.
