stevenson22By Allan Fox: WBC light heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson (23-1, 20 KO’s) will be defending his title this Saturday night against #1 WBO, #3 WBC Andrzej Fonfara (25-2, 15 KO’s) in a fight that should be entertaining while it lasts on Showtime Championship Boxing at 9:00 PM, May 24th at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Canada.

Stevenson has blowing through his opposition with ease in the past year in destroying Tony Bellew, Tavoris Cloud, Chad Dawson and Darnell Boone by knockouts. There was concern initially whether Stevenson had the chin and the talent to beat the better fighters like Dawson and Cloud, but Stevenson showed clearly in those fights that he had more than enough talent to hang with those guys. Now there’s really no one to give Stevenson a test in the division with the way things are set up other than the soon to be 50-year-old Bernard Hopkins, who will likely wind up facing Stevenson later this year if he keeps winning.

Fonfara, 26, is a tall 6’2″ fighter with an upright stance and with good power. Fonfara hasn’t looked like a world beater in fights against Glen Johnson and Gabriel Campillo, but he’s done what he’s needed to in order to win.

Stevenson, 36, recently made a controversial move by signing on with Al Haymon, a move that basically all but impossible for Stevenson to face unbeaten WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev, a fighter whose fights are televised by HBO. With Stevenson now on Showtime, there’s pretty much no way that he’ll ever face Kovalev unless one of the two fighters move to the same cable giant that the other is fighting on.

On the undercard are some interesting fights between middleweight knockout artist David Lemieux (31-2, 29 KO’s) and Fernando Guerrero (26-2, 19 KO’s), and light middleweights Jermell Charlo (23-0, 11 KO’s) and Charlie Ota (24-1-1, 16 KO’s). Also on the undercard is unbeaten light heavyweight Eleider Alvarez (14-0, 8 KO’s) facing Alexander Johnson (15-1, 6 KO’s), welterweights Kevin Bizier and Carlos Leonardo Herrera squaring off.

Other fights on the undercard:

Julian Williams vs. Michael Medina
Mikael Zewski vs. Prince Doku Jr
