Khan signs with Al Haymon

By Scott Gilfoid: Former IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan has reportedly signed with well-known boxing adviser Al Haymon to help guide his career, according to Fighthype. What this will mean to Khan’s career is hard to know, because Khan is already getting all the big fight that he wants except for the big money bout against Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Having Haymon help pull the strings may not be needed at this point for Khan, as he’s already in line for the Mayweather fight by fighting former WBA welterweight champion Luis Collazo on the May 3rd Mayweather vs. Marcos Maidana undercard at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Where Haymon might be useful is if Khan gets beaten by Collazo. Haymon will be able to steer him in the right direction for a year or so by matching him against guys that he’s almost certain that Khan can beat, like Carlos Molina, the fighter that Adrien Broner is rebuilding his career against on the Mayweather-Maidansa fight card. Yeah, Khan already beat Molina, but Haymon will no doubt be good at selecting similar guys to get Khan a title shot in a short period of time.

I don’t know how well it’ll help Khan eventually win a world title if he doesn’t have the chin or the talent to win a strap, but Haymon will at least put Khan into position for a title by shot by picking the right fights to get him to that position. I guess Julio Diaz was a little too good, because Khan struggled badly in beating him in his rebuilding fight last year in April. Haymon might need to aim a little lower than Diaz when it comes time to match Khan if he gets beaten by Collazo.

If Khan beats him, then it’s a no-brainer that he’ll be getting the Mayweather fight later in the year. I don’t think Khan would deserve the fight with Mayweather, because I don’t rate Collazo as being in the class of the top welterweights like Keith Thurman. But idea seems to be to get Khan the Mayweather fight, and that’s why Collazo has been picked out instead of someone that would likely knock Khan out like Thurman.

If Khan loses to Collazo, then I would expect for Haymon to carefully match Khan until he eventually gets another title shot. Haymon will do his job of getting Khan title shots, but he’s not going to be able to help win the fight if Khan lacks the talent.
