Groves may need to drum up interest in the Froch fight single-handedly

groves676By Scott Gilfoid: George Groves (19-1, 15 KO’s) feels that IBF/WBA super middleweight champion Carl Froch (32-2, 23 KO’s) might not be up to the job to try and stay in there with him for a little back and forth banter during their press conferences and face to face meetings to drum up interest in their May 31st rematch at the Wembley Stadium in London, UK.

Groves thinks that the shove Froch gave him during their first photo shoot at Wembley and the fact that Froch wouldn’t stare him down properly during that meeting, it was a sign that Froch might not be interested in going the extra yard to get people interested in the fight like last time. As such, Groves thinks he might need to depend on promoter Eddie Hearn to help him get people interested in the fight.

“I will verbally bully him, with Eddie sitting next to him, trying to talk for him,” Groves said theguardian. “Eddie has realized that Carl doesn’t want to or can’t handle the verbal exchanges. I’ve already said to him: ‘Listen, it’s going to be me and you this time. We’ll have to build it up, because Carl’s not up to the challenge.’”

That would be pretty sad if Froch is going to take a back seat to the promotion of the fight due to him being reluctant to face Groves and trash talk him back like they did in getting people up for their fight last November. If Groves is going to be expected to do all the work in getting fans interested in the rematch, then it’s going to make it tough for the fight to outdo what it did previously.

Groves needs to be able to sit next to Froch, and tell him exactly what he thinks of him. If they’re going to be kept apart or if Froch won’t be facing him or talking to him, then that’s going to be bad.

It was perfect last time with the two of them going at each other, especially when Groves had Froch worked up on Sky Ringside. Froch closed his eyes at one point and got emotional, and Groves thought he was about to start crying. I don’t know if Froch was or not, but he had his eyes closed in a weird way and it looked like he couldn’t handle the verbal interaction with Groves. I thought Froch was about to start crying.

I don’t think Hearn is going to be a good substitute for Froch in the meetings. If Hearn is going to do all the talking for Froch then what the heck would Froch even be needed for at the press conferences?
