by Steve Davis: Terence Crawford tonight (23-0, 16 KO’s) won the WBO Lightweight championship by a 12 unanimous decision against Scotland’s greatest fighter WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns (36-3-1, 11 KO’s) by scores of 116-112, 117-111 and 115-112 at the SSE Hydro in Glasgow. Burns just couldn’t get to grips with his opponent tonight, as Crawford was slick, awkward and hard to hit.

Burns looked a shadow of his former self tonight and every time Crawford got near and let his hands go, Burns would hold a high guard and throw very little back. Burns seemed to be protecting his jaw which he broke in his last fight against Raymond Beltran. Burns started the fight using his jab and throwing a right hand and for the first three rounds held his own. But by round four it was Crawford all the way, he even staggered Ricky a couple of times.

Crawford just couldn’t seem to miss and by the tenth Ricky looked a tired fighter. Crawford had huge twelve round and on one occasion the referee looked poised to step in and save Burns, however Ricky managed to see out the round in order to hear the final bell. In the post fight interviews Crawford stated that the belt meant everything to him, Burns said he would like a rematch.

For me Crawford do enough to beat Burns, but he didn’t look anything special, if anything it was a case of Burns looking terrible. Credit has to go out to Burns coming back from such a terrible injury, but I think it’s time for him to call it a day, Happy that he has created a legacy in boxing history, a two weight world champion and one of the best, if not the best boxer Scotland had ever faced. Ricky thanks for the ride.
