Chavez Jr. vs. Golovkin possible for July 12th at the Forum in Los Angeles

golovkin888By Dan Ambrose: A huge fight between former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (48-1-1, 32 KO’s) and WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (29-0, 26 KO’s) is a possibility for July 12th at the Forum in Los Angeles, California, according to Steve Kim. The particulars aren’t known as of yet, but it’s pretty obvious that the fight will be taking place at super middleweight because there is no way that the huge cruiserweight-sized Chavez Jr. is going to be able to boil down from the 190s to make weight at 160 to fight Golovkin for his World Boxing Association 160lb title.

As it is, Chavez Jr. is going to have a real battle just to continue to make 168. Looking at how huge he was for his recent rematch against Brian Vera earlier this month on March 1st, Chavez Jr. really needs to move up in weight to the light heavyweight division, if not the cruiserweight division.

Chavez Jr. was able to use his size and superior weight advantage to pound out a 12 round unanimous decision over Vera in the rematch. However, it was still a surprisingly competitive fight. But against Golovkin, Chavez Jr. is going to be in for a world of hurt because he’s a much bigger puncher than Vera, with far superior skills. Chavez Jr. prides himself on his ability to take head shots, but he’s going to take some terrible head shots against Golovkin and I can see this as possibly the first fight where Chavez Jr. gets stopped. If he doesn’t get knocked out by Golovkin, then he’s going to take a savage beating in this fight. Golovkin hits too hard for someone to just take the shots for 12 rounds without it doing big time damage against them.

Golovkin has stopped his last 16 opponents dating back to 2008. There hasn’t been anyone with the chin to take his shots, and I suspect we’ll still be saying the same thing after July 12th when Chavez Jr. becomes another victim for him. Recently, Golovkin has knocked out Osumanu Adama, Curtis Stevens, Matthew Macklin, Nobuhiro Ishida, Gabriel Rosado, and Gregorz Proksa. Those are decent fighters, but Golovkin easily stopped them without sustaining much in the damage himself from their shots.

This is a bad match-up for Chavez Jr., because we saw what Vera was able to do to him in getting robbed in their first fight last September, and we saw what Sergio Martinez did to Chavez Jr. in turning him into an over-sized punching back for 12 rounds in 2012. Golovkin is going to brutalize Chavez Jr. and either stop him or give him such a beating that it’s going to leave him looking a terrible sight.
