Bellew looks flabby at weigh-in for Brudov fight

bellew79By Scott Gilfoid: Tony Bellew (20-2-1, 12 KO’s) thinks that moving up in weight to the cruiserweight division is going to be the answers to his struggles in the ring. He’s bragged about how he gained a ton of weight a couple of weeks after his stoppage loss to Adonis Stevenson last year as a sign that he doesn’t belong fighting in the light heavyweight division. Bellew still doesn’t have any muscles even though he ate his way from 177 to 197.5. He weighed that much at yesterday’s weigh-in, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Bellew comes into the fight tonight over 200 lbs.

In looking at how flabby Bellew looked at his weigh-in last Friday for his fight tonight against Valery Brudov (41-4, 28 KO’s), I think Bellew is kidding himself about him belonging in the cruiserweight division. He ate his way up to near 200 lbs, but he sure as heck doesn’t look like a cruiserweight to me. He just looks like a flabby fighter that had one too many meals.

The top cruiserweights have frames that show that they belong in the division, as they’re in excellent shape with little fat. But in looking at Bellew, he just looks like an out of shape light heavyweight to me. I don’t see new muscle having been put on Bellew’s frame to fill him out to the cruiserweight division.

To me, Bellew looks like a light heavyweight with 25 lbs of extra fat on him.

Bellew and Brudov will be fighting at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, UK.

What was interesting in watching the weigh-in was how Bellew was bossing Brudov around when they were on stage for the face off. Bellew was really calling the shots, and it was funny to see. Brudov should have just ignored Bellew instead of bowing to him and following his instructions. I thought it was pretty sad to watch, but also funny because Bellew was acting like he was a big shot fighter instead of someone coming off of a 6th round stoppage loss to Adonis Stevenson. I mean, I could see Bellew bossing a fighter around on the stage if he was a champion caliber fighter, but Bellew is the opposite of that. He just beaten down and put in his place by Stevenson, and now he’s scurrying away from the light heavyweight division rather than sticking it out. Bellew is even talking about retiring if he loses to Brudov tonight.

“I think it’s time to show what got me a name,” Bellew said via Sky Sports. “People don’t turn up to see a tickling contest. People don’t turn up to see someone run away and win points for 12 rounds.”

I always thought that Bellew named himself the “Bomber” rather than having someone give it to him based on how he fights, because he doesn’t have a lot of knockouts on his resume.

Welterweight Kell Brook is also on this card and will be facing someone named Alvaro Robles (17-2, 15 KO’s) in a 10 round bout at junior middleweight. Brook’s promoter Eddie Hearn dug Robles up somewhere, because he’s not a top 15 world ranked fighter and few people have heard of him.
