Tyson Fury suffers cut in sparring, says he’ll still fight Abell on Feb. 15th

By Scott Gilfoid: With a week to go before his fight against Joey Abell (29-7, 28 KO’s), unbeaten heavyweight Tyson Fury (21-0, 15 KO’s) suffered a cut over his left eye during a sparring session with former heavyweight world title challenger Eddie Chambers on Friday. Here’s the thing: Fury says he’ll still take the fight with Abell regardless of being cut. It might be out of his hands if Fury doesn’t get clearance from a doctor to take the fight. Abell and Fury are still currently scheduled to face each other at the Copper Box Arena in London, UK.

Fury said on his social media site: “Look, I got cut in sparring yesterday. Should I do a Haymaker and pull out of my next fight? LOL [laugh out loud]. p****y. I’m still fighting.”

The most obvious question is what on Earth was Fury still doing sparring with a week to go before a fight? That doesn’t make much sense, does it? You don’t see guys like Deontay Wilder doing that, because he has the sense enough to realize that you don’t want to risk suffering a cut by sparring that close to a fight. Fury and David Haye need to be smart about having limits to their sparring. I see this as a sign that Fury badly needs a good trainer that can take him through his paces. I’d suggest someone like Freddie Roach, if he’d agree to have Fury.

In all honesty, Fury’s fight with Abell is such a sad mismatch that Fury could probably go in the fight with cuts on his face like Frankenstein’s monster and still end up beating Abell. We’re talking about a fighter who was stopped in the 5th round in his last fight by the light hitting jabbing machine Kubrat Pulev last December. Fury isn’t facing anyone talented like Deontay who put his lights out if he dared to come into the ring with a cut.

I’d be surprised if the medical staff let Fury go ahead and take the fight with Abell, because with a cut over his left eye, he could end up bleeding all over creation once Abell taps him with a few right hand shots to the head.

This is potentially bad news for Dereck Chisora, because he could lose his chief support for his fight against Kevin Johnson. Without Fury on the card, it takes a lot of the air out of that card.
