Pacquiao hasn’t signed an extension with Top Rank

pac014By Chris Williams: In an official statement at Manny Pacquiao’s website, they’re reporting that Pacquiao has not signed a contract extension with Top Rank. The official statement came about from a news report that Pacquiao has signed a $75 million extension to remain with Top Rank. If Pacquiao re-signs with Top Rank, then he could say goodbye to any chances of him getting a $50+ million payday against Floyd Mayweather Jr. in 2015 after his contract with Top Rank runs out.

Here’s the statement at mp8.ph: “There has been no extension of Manny Pacquiao’s contract with Top Rank. To hopefully stop all the rumors, we are making an official statement that no contract extension between Manny Pacquiao and Top Rank for a reported $75 million has been executed at this time.”

This doesn’t mean that Pacquiao won’t re-up with Top Rank and end up losing out on his only chance of getting a fight against Mayweather in the near future. Mayweather already laid out the instructions for what Pacquiao needs to do in order to get a fight against him. Mayweather wants Pacquiao to leave Bob Arum of Top Rank, and then once he’s free of him, then he would be in position for a fight. Signing a 2-4 year extension with Top Rank would essentially be the end of any chances of a Pacquiao-Mayweather fight unless Mayweather changed his mind about never wanting to work with Arum again. I don’t think Mayweather will change his mind, because if he was going to do that then he would have done it a long time ago.

If Pacquiao were to get a huge $75 million amount to extend with Top Rank, then I could see that as a really tempting offer that would be difficult to turn down. However, I’m still not sure if it would be worth it because Pacquiao could get big fights against Golden Boy fighters like Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, Danny Garcia, and Amir Khan, in addition to Mayweather if he were to leave Top Rank. If Pacquiao stays with Top Rank, then these are the guys that he’ll likely be fighting for the remainder of his career: Tim Bradley, Juan Manuel Marquez [one more time], Mikey Garcia, Brandon Rios, Mike Alvarado, and Ruslan Provodnikov.
