Juan Manuel Lopez preparing for Ponce De Leon rematch on March 15th
SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO- With his mind set only in his bout against former world champion Daniel Ponce de Leon, the former bantamweight and featherweight world titlist Juan Manuel “Juanma” Lopez worked this afternoon for the media as part of his training for the show that will headline on March 15 his countryman Danny “Swift” Garcia defending his WBA and WBC junior welter weight belts against Mauricio Herrera at the Ruben Rodriguez Coliseum in Bayamon, in a presentation of Golden Boy Promotions and Swift Promotions in association with PR Best Boxing Promotions ( PRBBP ), which will be broadcast on Showtime.
The bout between Juanma Lopez (33-3, 30 KOs) and Ponce de Leon (45-5, 35 KOs), who will fight for the International World Boxing Organization (WBO) title in a 10 round contest, will headline the Showtime Extreme portion on March 15.
“We are working hard and I feel great. We have made good sparring and working with my mind only for this fight, which we know is very important in my career. The condition is very good right now and the weight too”, said Lopez, who finished his job after almost two hours and weighed 137 ½ pounds. “Training with Freddy Trinidad is very intense, but I feel pretty good”.
For his trainer Freddy Trinidad, López is in good shape at the moment and for the fight, he said that Lopez will be at 100%, so that in addition to the physical labor he talks to the boxer and work mentally.
“The condition is very good, Juanma is fine. He has worked 100% and looks with good stamina and good attitude in training. This is about doing the fight tha he has to do, to follow the strategy that we carry to the fight and does not get out of it”, said Trinidad, who has already helped Lopez in some of his fights. “We know Juanma is not the same as it was at 122 pounds, but that’s boxing. So we worked on that part, also the mind and the attitude has been excellent”.
Today López began with jumpe the rope for 15 minutes, 15 minutes on shadows, then work four rounds of four minutes with 30 seconds rest in the pads with Trinidad. Then he made five rounds with the punching bags and finished with some rounds with the speed bag, always doing four-minute rounds with 30 seconds rest.
The brawl between Lopez and Ponce de León is a rematch after their June 7, 2008, bout when Lopez knocked out Ponce de Leon in the first round to became the WBO 122 pounds champion in Atlantic City.
“I know that this fight with Ponce de Leon is not going to be the same as the first, so this time we are working differently and we have to prepared for what he bring”, said Lopez.
The main event of the night will be Swift Garcia (27-0, 16 KOs) defending his WBA and the WBC 140 pounds belts against Mauricio Herrera (20-3, 7 KOs). Additionally, heavyweight Deontay “The Bronze Bomber” Wilder (30-0, 30 KOs) and Malik “King” Scott (36-1-1, 13 KOs) will meet in a 12 round WBC eliminator.
Also, world contender Jose “Chelo” Gonzalez (22-1, 17 KOs) will return to action when he faces an opponent to be determined in a 10 rounds and lightweight bout, and prospect John Karl Sosa (8-0, 6 KOs) will make his first fight of 2014 when he takes on Antonio Sanchez (5-2-2, 3 KOs) in a six round junior welterweight fight.
Four other bouts, that complete the program, will be announced soon.
