chisora445By Scott Gilfoid: Dereck Chisora (20-4,13 KO’s) defeated Kevin Johnson (29-5-1, 14 KO’s) by a 12 round unanimous decision in a fight filled with massive amounts of rabbit punches by Chisora at the Copper Box Arena in London, UK. The final judges scores were 118-109, 118-110, 118-109. Chisora got away with countless rabbit punches round after round despite the protests from Johnson.

For most of the fight, Chisora would plod forward throwing throwing wild shots that would either come around to hit Johnson in the back of the head or they’d sail around the back of his head and barely miss. It was incredibly to watch, and confusing how the referee just let Chisora get away with all those punches without taking off 6-8 points and disqualifying him.

In the 5th round, Chisora knocked Johnson down with a right hand to the side of the head. Johnson wasn’t hurt. It was one of those slapping shot that knocked Johnson off balance more than hurt him.

In the 9th round, Johnson hurt Chisora with a body shot that caused Chisora to back up and act like he’d been hit low. He wasn’t hit low. He was hit right on the belt, but it obviously hurt Chisora. Heck, Chisora’s trunks were hiked up almost to his shoulders, so it was like impossible for Johnson not to hit Chisora low. The referee needed to pull his trunks down.

After the fight, Chisora said he wants to go to Moscow to fight former WBA heavyweight champion Alexander Povetkin next. I think that would be a mistake if Chisora took that fight because Povetkin would have the work rate to beat Chisora, unlike Johnson.

Johnson didn’t throw enough punches in the fight and basically gave the fight away by not being busy enough.

You can’t say enough how Chisora was allowed to get away with throwing rabbit punches all night long. I can’t see Chisora getting away with throwing rabbit punches if we had some of the more strict referees working the fight. It’s mind boggling that the referee just let Chisora nail Johnson with punches to the back of the head round after round. With the referee ignoring Johnson’s protests about the rabbit shots, he probably should have gotten in the gutter with Chisora to see if he would stop throwing the rabbit punches if he threw some of his own, but Johnson took the high road and fought cleanly the way fighters are supposed to.

Chisora was so wide open for shots tonight with the way he was plodding forward. It was just that Johnson didn’t have the conditioning to throw shots because Chisora was there to be knocked out tonight if Johnson had let his hands go.

In the 12th round, Johnson finally threw some punches and he dominated the round and had Chisora reeling for the entire round. If Johnson had fought like this the entire fight, he would have won. As it was, I gave Johnson four rounds.
