Chavez Jr-Vera: Brian may need a KO to get the win

vera2By Dan Ambrose: I hope for Brian Vera’s sake that he’s coming into his March 1st rematch against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (47-1-1, 32 KO’s) looking for a knockout because it might be the only way he gets a win in this fight. We saw last September that it’s not enough that Vera dominated Chavez Jr. and badly out-worked him over 10 rounds, he still ended up losing the fight by a wide decision on two of the judges’ scorecards. That’s not the first time I’ve seen Chavez Jr. get the benefit of the doubt in fights, and probably won’t be the last time.

Looking at this fight in the real way, Chavez Jr. is the star while Vera is just the guy that is being brought in for Chavez Jr. to clear up the controversy from their last fight. Vera was expected to lose and lose badly to Chavez Jr., but he surprised people by out-working the son of a legend and making him look bad in the process.

It was Chavez Jr’s fault for coming into the fight looking like a full-fledged crusierweight, albeit one with a terrible work rate and not major league power. Chavez Jr. had the look of a fighter who taken off a ton of weight in a short amount of time, and it’s not surprising he fought so poorly. It also wasn’t surprising that the judges gave him the decision.

Vera has chance, but not a good one, to spoil Chavez Jr’s plans for a title shot in 2014 against one of the super middleweight champions. However, it’s going to take a huge onslaught for Vera to try and get Chavez Jr. out of there inside the distance. I don’t know if it’s possible for Vera, because Chavez Jr. has the ability to take head shots like no one else. The only fighter that could take Chavez Jr. out if Gennady Golovkin, but that’s not a fight that can happen due to Chavez Jr. fighting in the 168 lb division now and heading for 175 if he keeps eating.

Vera will probably be wasting his time if he focuses on throwing head shots against Chavez Jr., because it’s not work trying to get him out of there that way. Vera is going to need to attack Chavez Jr’s body and focus on that area for 12 rounds. It’s a risky bet for Vera to go after Chavez Jr’s body, because it means he’ll have to stay close to him and risk getting hit with a lot of Chavez Jr’s body shots, but that’s still the only way I can see Vera winning this fight. Like I said, I don’t see the judges giving the fight to Vera by a decision. If they didn’t give it to him before with him dominating Chavez Jr., they’re probably not going to give it to him this time.
