berto91By Dan Ambrose: Former WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto (28-3, 22 KO’s) is back in training for his next fight in the Summer, according to Dan Rafael of ESPN. Berto, 30, is coming off of a torn right shoulder tendon that he suffered in his last fight against Jesus Soto Karass last year in July. Berto was stopped in the 12th round by Karass. However, Berto tore the tendon in the 2nd round and had to fight the last 10 rounds using mostly his left hand.

Berto had successful surgery on the torn tendon last year, and he’s now training with Virgil Hunter in Oakland, California.

At 30, with three fights in the past three years, Berto might be on the downside of his career at this point. He’s lost 3 out of his last 4 fights dating back to his 12 round unanimous decision loss to Victor Ortiz in 2011, and it’s difficult to picture Berto being able to remain injury free long enough to put a string of good wins together. He suffered a ruptured biceps muscle in his win over Carlos Quintana in April of 2010.

In 2012, Berto suffered another torn biceps that needed for him to get surgery to repair the problem. Counting the torn tendon that Berto suffered in the Soto Karass fight, Berto has now had three major injuries that has involved one of his limbs. That’s not a good sign considering that he’s only 30. If the injuries continue at this pace for Berto then it’s hard to see him being able to stay healthy long enough for him to win enough fights to get a title shot. Without a champion just picking him out from the crowd to give him an undeserved title shot, Berto has a long haul to try and get ranked enough to get a crack at one of the belts.

Besides his losses to Soto Karass and Ortiz, Berto was soundly beaten by Robert Guerrero in losing by a 12 round in November of 2012. Berto didn’t suffer any injuries in that fight. He was just plain beaten by Guerrero, and beaten badly.
