Matthysse to fight in April or May; wants to win title

matthysse543By Dan Ambrose: Former WBC interim light welterweight champion Lucas Matthysse (34-3, 32 KO’s) plans on returning to the ring in April or May against an opponent still to be determined in the United States. Matthysse, 31, hasn’t fought since losing a close 12 round unanimous decision to WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia last September in Las Vegas, Nevada.

“I’m gonna take the title back,” Matthysse said to campeonenelring. Matthysse also said that he’ll be back in action “between April and May.”

Ranked #3 WBC, #3 WBO, Matthysse is still ranked high enough to where he’ll be able to get another title shot within a short period of time if he stays busy and avoids a long layoff like some fighters take following a disappointing loss like the one he experienced last September.

There was talk initially of Garcia giving Matthysse an immediate rematch due to the close aspect of their fight, and because of how referee blew the call in giving Garcia a knockdown in the 11th round after he shoved Matthysse across the ring to where he got caught in the ropes and was knocked down while stuck between the ropes. But it looks like Danny will move on and face someone else. The thing is Garcia would be better off fighting Matthysse than anyone else unless he can get Floyd Mayweather Jr. or Adrien Broner.

There’s not any better options for Garcia to fight at 140 then having him fight a rematch with Matthysse. If Garcia just wants an easy fight in order to milk his title, then he can do that. But Garcia already had two title milking fights since he won the vacant WBC belt against Erik Morales in 2012. If Danny wants to accomplish something then he needs to fight Matthysse again.

If Matthysse wants a fight against WBO light welterweight champion Ruslan Provodnikov then he might have to wait a while because he’s going to be fighting one of Top Rank’s fighters in his next bout, and he won’t be available until after he takes that fight. Provodnikov definitely won’t be available for April or May for Matthysse.

Matthysse had this to say about fellow countryman Marcos Maidana’s recent win over Adrien Broner: “I knew he was gonna beat him. Sincerely, it makes me glad and i think it’s good for boxing, for him and for his career. He already beated everyone, his breaking his back and he deserves it.”

There’s also a chance that Matthysse may move his training camp to Oxnard, California to train alongside Maidana with Robert Garcia.
