Broner: Watch how I come back fighting for 7-8 figures

broner8583By Allan Fox: Adrien Broner (27-1, 22 KO’s) is expecting to fight for big money when he returns to the ring at some point in 2014. Broner was dominated in his last fight in losing by a 12 round unanimous decision to Marcos Maidana last December, but he still feels he’ll get over $1 million when he fights again.

If Broner fights for a world title in his next fight then it’s definitely possible for him to get at least a million, but his comment about getting 8 figures would seem to be a dream that will never happen unless he moves back down to 135 and dominates at that weight for the next 5 years.

Broner said this on his twitter last night:

Broner’s best chance of getting big money is if his promoters at Golden Boy hooks him up with a rematch against Marcos Maidana. That would give Broner a good chance of getting $1 million at least. But it’s a dangerous fight for him, because a second loss to Maidana will pretty much end Broner as a big name. He could take the fight, but it might end up being a cash out type of affair for him in being finished off as a major player by Maidana. It would perhaps be smarter for Broner to face lesser opposition, learn from his loss to Maidana, and slowly build his way back to fighting quality opposition. That would be a better long term move for Broner if he wants to stick around the sport and be a major player for a while. But if he rushes into a rematch with Maidana, he’s going to lose that fight and probably even worse than he did last time. It’s just not a good match-up for Broner.

Broner’s problem is he doesn’t have the size, speed, power, work rate or mobility to match-up with the top welterweights and light welterweights. They all appear to be better than him in every facet of the game, and it seems pointless to put Broner back in with Maidana or even put him in with WBA/WBC 140 lb. champion Danny Garcia. Those guys are too good for Broner, and they would ruin his star power by giving him another loss, and make him look like a pretender.

Broner also added this: “I love everybody that hate me and the ones who stayed down with me while they try to bring me down I will be welterweight champ again.”

There’s ways of making Broner look good, but it’s going require for Golden Boy to match him softly for a long time and convince him to move back down to the lightweight division where he’s much better suited. Broner doesn’t have the physical tools to be a top fighter at 140 or 147.
