The importance of being unbeaten

broner6362By Trevellyan: There has been much debate over the years regarding boxing records, the importance of being undefeated and the repercussions to fighters who suddenly lose there ‘0.’ Last week’s defeat of former WBA welterweight champion Adrien Broner (27-1, 22 KO’s) by the hands of Marcos Maidana (35-3, 3 KO’s) has brought this topic back to the lips of fans and questions have been asked. Has this ruined Broner’s career?

Simply the answer is no. Yes, Broner clearly lost the fight to Maidana. However, I believe some credit is due considering the easier options that could have been taken. I’m sure Broner will reflect on the loss and come back with hopefully a new attitude. Last Saturday’s bout reminded everyone that exciting fights can be made when fighters take the step to fight dangerous ranked fighters.

Recently there been a lot of criticism regarding fighters who have records filled with journeymen, non ranked and unknown fighters however are the fighters really to blame? Regularly fighters call each other out and although words are exchanged very rarely is the fight scheduled. So what appears to be the problem?

Unfortunately boxers are viewed as a product and promoters appear to protect fighters to ensure an undefeated record as this makes a potential PPV opportunity more appealing. Fights also don’t get scheduled if the same promoter has a joint interest in both fighters. Ultimately the fans lose and the boxers get criticized just so promoters can ensure profits.

Returning to my initial question is it important to be undefeated? The answer is no as many of the fan favorites such as Maidana, Dereck Chisora, Mike Perez and Lucas Matthysse all fight and push for tough opponents and have won support from fans due to this. These fighters should be seen as an example and unfortunately without one regulated organization controlling this situation the days of protected fighters are here to remain.
