Adrien Broner exposed by Maidana and here’s why

maidana74By Rav: After Adrian Broner’s defeat last night to Marcos Maidana (35-3, 31 KO’s) in losing his WBA title, what’s clear is a lot of flaws have been exposed which show what Broner is really about. Maidana’s game plan of unsettling Broner early by roughing him up worked and the volume of body and head punches left Broner unsure what to do next and made him doubt himself to the point where he was scared to let his hands go similar to Julio Chavez Jr. against Sergio Martinez.

Broner’s arrogance showed in his corner at times with him displaying open defiance to his trainer, who was trying to instruct him with good advice. But round after round, Broner had no answer with what Maidana was doing in the ring. At times, Broner looked scared to show a sense of urgency to go after Maidana the way he should have.

Broner’s body language spoke volumes. Throughout the fight he looked at times worried and clueless in the corner, and looked like little more than a broken man in the later rounds. Near the end of the fight, Broner seemed like he couldn’t wait for the final bell.

At the end, Broner had the look on his face that seemed to say that he knew he had lost. As soon as the score cards were announced, he left the ring straightaway leaving his entourage.

What showed the most was Broner clearly didn’t know what to do after the first 4 rounds, and his corner didn’t help as much as they should of. Broner thought he could just turn up and out-box Maidana and that would be it. But Broner didn’t have any plan B to adjust to what Maidana was doing in the fight. This could be his trainer’s fault, assuming that Broner would automatically know what to do in every situation.

I always had feeling that Broner was over-hyped after the Gavin Rees fight last February, and that he had never been tested to the point where he could say he was the next pound-for-pound king. Sometimes a fighter starts to believe his own hype, and this is what I feel happened to Broner.

Take nothing away from the much improved Maidana. He is very tough and he really improved as a fighter due to him dedicating himself to working on his flaws. Maidana has become and all round boxer puncher as opposed to the one punch brawler he previously was.

Does Broner want to dedicate himself to boxing or be a rapper on tour partying and boxing part time. If he needs inspiration from this defeat he only has to look at his opponent Maidana.
