Fury: Deontay Wilder fight is the only one worth making

deontay73872By Scott Gilfoid: Well, it looks like Tyson Fury (21-0, 15 KO’s) mainly wants to face unbeaten Deontay Wilder (30-0, 30 KO’s) next rather than another heavyweight contender. Fury said on his social media site that he doesn’t see anyone else worth fighting other than the 6’7” Deontay.

I guess that leaves fellow British heavyweight Dereck Chisora out of luck, because Fury apparently doesn’t want to go backwards with his career to fight him after having easily beaten him badly 2 years ago.

Fury said this on his twitter “Team Fury will do anything in air power to make this fight, because its the only fight out there for me worth fighting. The result will be the same KO. It’s up to Team Bomber [ Team Deontay Wilder] now. I’m the best heavyweight on earth! Let’s see if @BronzeBomber & his team are substance or just hot air. This fight will get every boxing fan in the world on there feet. Lets go.

Deontay said on his twitter “Tyson_Fury, step 1 has been done. We are the top dogs among the heavyweights. Bro, it’s about that time. Let’s finally give the fans what they want.”

It makes sense for Fury not to waste time on Chisora because it’s not a fight that would help Fury in the rankings because Chisora isn’t ranked as high as Deontay or Fury, so it would be like Fury turning around and fighting just another fringe level contender instead of a talented top contender with a high world ranking like Deontay.

The question now is whether Golden Boy Promotions will attempt to negotiate a fight with Fury or not. In the past, Deontay got really expected about fighting American Bryant Jennings, but then Golden Boy Promotions didn’t make the deal for Deontay.

It would be a pity if the same thing happens with this fight because it would easily be the biggest fight of Deontay’s career, and it might take a while for Deontay to get a similar huge fight.

Deontay would have to wait until he gets a world title shot against one of the Klitschkos before he gets a fight as bad as the Fury bout, and who knows who long Deontay will have to wait before he gets a title shot. It could be next year, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the Klitschkos string it out until 2016.

With Vitali fighting less than once a year, and Wladimir loaded up with mandatory title defenses followed by his customary 2 optional title defenses, we could easily be looking at 2016 before Deontay gets a title shot.

I’d be willing to bet Wladimir retires before giving Deontay a crack. For this reason I think it’s important that Golden Boy Promotions works to put the Deontay-Fury fight together in order to keep Deontay making money while he waits for ages before he eventually gets a world title shot. Believe me, the 28-year-old Deontay will probably be 30-31 before he finally gets a world title shot, and that’s why he needs to have Golden Boy do the best that they can for him in setting hm up with named fighters that will give him a good payday.

This is not a good match-up for Fury and it’s kind of surprising that his promoter Mick Hennessey is willing to bless the fight with Deontay. Facing the smallish 6’2” Haye is one thing, but Deontay is much bigger and much stronger than Haye. It’s a whole different story for Fury because he won’t be able to stand on the outside and use his long reach to throw his slapping punches against the equally long-armed Deontay.

Fury will be eating big shots from Deontay from the outside, and I think he’ll be forced to try and get inside on Deontay in order to avoid getting knocked out with a single shot. But the thing is Deontay is a much better inside fighter than Fury, and it’s very possible that he’ll knock Fury out with a shot in close that will send Fury down for the count.
