price600By Aidan Neill: David Price (15-2, 13 KO’s) has reportedly agreed to sign with the Denmark based Sauerland Promotion, according to the Daily Mail. Price was left without a promoter after the retirement of the long-serving Frank Maloney and a swarm of promoters were reportedly interested in taking the heavy-handed heavyweight onto their books.

On the 15th of October, the Sauerland twitter feed (@sauerlandbros) set the rumour mill alight by tweeting “Major UK signing to be announced by #teamsauerland at a media lunch in London on Monday #guesswho”. If it is Price, as expected, it would be a big move into the UK market for Sauerland Promotions who have a reputable stable of continental fighters.

It seems the brothers Sauerland have been convinced by the heavy hitting performances Price put in before being stopped twice by the awkward American veteran Tony Thompson. Price was steaming through domestic contenders like Matt Skelton and Audley Harrison before the baffling move to have him fight Thompson. Although he seemed past his best, it was easy to forget how obstructive a fighter Thompson is and Maloney made the grave mistake of underestimating him.

Kalle and Nisse Sauerland will be charged with the task of rebuilding a career that has been heavily damaged by the two defeats in his home town of Liverpool. However discounted Price has been by the boxing community, he will sell tickets by the bucket load in Liverpool where he has always been a popular figure among the public. Frank Warren recently won a purse bid for the huge domestic dust-up between Price and the ever interesting Dereck Chisora (18-4 12 KO’s) for Price’s BBBofC Heavyweight title.

It is thought Price will need one or two tune up fights away from Liverpool before this match-up to regain his confidence after the shattering defeats to Thompson. It represents an exciting move for the popular Price who has teamed up with David Haye’s well respected trainer Adam Booth. It remains to be seen whether these drastic changes will improve Price, but he clearly has to improve on his stamina among other areas before fighting amongst the world ranks as expected from his early progress.
