Amir Khan doesn’t belong in the ring with Floyd Mayweather Jr.

khan-fouling1By Lavon Shepard: Currently Amir Khan (28-3 19KOs ) is lobbying for a fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. This matchup is ridiculous for two reasons. For one Amir Khan is not in the same league as Mayweather and should start beating B-level fighters before trying challenge the big dogs in boxing. Second, there are more deserving opponents still out there for Floyd to face that will create fan excitement.

Everyone knows about the squabbling between top rank and golden boy and Mayweather and Arum, so I’ll leave Top Rank fighters off the list. People would love to see Mayweather face Danny Garcia. Garcia, a guy who knocked Khan out and was dominant in his win against Lucas Matthysse is a no-brainer over Khan. Its going to take two or three guys to beat Mayweather the way he’s fighting but Garcia would at least make it intriguing.

With a combination of boxing skill and the power to brawl, Garcia would put pressure on Mayweather. The question is can he land his shots and be effective against arguably the best defensive fighter to step in the ring. Hopefully this fight gets made before Khan gets a shot so we can find out how good Danny Garcia is against A-level fighters.

Miguel Cotto is another fighter that would make sense to be Floyd’s next opponent. Though he suffered a unanimous decision loss to Floyd in their last encounter, Cotto was able to actually hit Mayweather and leave his mark on him by the end of the fight. He also looked invigorated in his return to the ring against Delvin Rodriguez (28-7-3 16 KO`s) earning a TKO victory with his trademark body shots. With his new trainer Freddie Roach in his corner, Cotto looks refocused, relentless, and in better shape than he’s been in for years. It would be interesting to see if training under Roach can make a difference.

Cotto and Garcia would give Mayweather a better challenge than Khan would and fans would be anxious to witness these outcomes. In his last fight against Julio Diaz Khan was floored and looked average at best against sub par competition. He could have possibly made a compelling case to fight Mayweather had he decided to take the match with Devon Alexander and won convincingly, but he dropped out of that match in hopes of winning the lottery with Floyd.

The fight could be exciting due to Khans come forward, throw punches in bunches style but its unlikely he would land anything or cause any damage to Floyd. He’d be there for Floyd to hit and with Mayweather’s accuracy this would be a lopsided decision or possibly late round knockout in Mayweather’s favor. Known as a fighter with a bigger bark than bite for most of his career, Khan should keep Mayweather’s name out his mouth for the time being and avenge his losses to Garcia, and Lamont Peterson, as well as take on Devon Alexander and Adrien Broner. If he can win those fights then there’s the Tim Bradleys, Ruslan Provodnikovs, Manny Pacquaios, and Brandon Rios` to get past before he`s truly ready for a match with Floyd Mayweather.
